LAUNCH YOUR CAREER AS AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR

Computational Genomic Epidemiology of Cancer
Funded Postdoctoral Fellowship

This program is designed to prepare fellows for careers as Independent investigators engaged
in research at the intersection of cancer research, genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, and
computer science. Cancer researchers obtaining training in this program will have the skills vital to deciphering the complex pathways comprised of genetic and environmental risk factors for disease, and will ultimately be able to provide clinicians and their patients with valuable information for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Undertaking innovative cancer research can require input from teams of scientists with a mixture of backgrounds, including molecular biology, oncology, medicine, genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, and computer science. Researchers with interdisciplinary training across these fields are extremely valuable to such teams, as they can act as catalysts for the integrated work necessary to accomplish some of the most promising and cutting edge cancer research.

An opportunity of a life-time

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified candidate to join our research team at the University of British Columbia.

At the University of British Columbia, Canada, we house one of the largest longitudinal population-based MS databases in the world. The high prevalence rates of MS in BC (currently affecting an estimated 240 per 105) provides our British Columbia-wide MS (‘BCMS’) database (established in 1980 by Dr Don Paty) with a substantial pool of patients. The database currently holds over 7500 patients followed for over 25 years. Approximately 1500 MS patients are seen each year within the BC MS clinics.

The successful applicant will contribute to a new 4-year project entitled: ‘The BeAMS Study Long-term Benefits and Adverse Effects of Beta-interferon for Multiple Sclerosis.’
The successful applicant will utilise the BC-wide multiple sclerosis database and other provincial health and drug databases such as PharmaNet, MSP and Vital Statistics to establish the long-term effectiveness and risks of a widely accepted class of treatments for MS, with a long-term objective of encouraging and facilitating the emergence and monitoring of novel MS treatments. The successful candidate will become involved in one or more of the project themes: drug effectiveness, adverse event monitoring, medical services utilization and employment outcomes.

There is also considerable scope for the applicant to initiate new avenues of research within the field of MS, based on their previous training and research interests. The successful applicant will be involved with all aspects of epidemiological research from study design, grant writing, planning, ensuring integrity of data, data linkage, patient chart reviews, executing and interpreting statistical analyses, presentation of findings, drafting and publication of scientific manuscripts.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated potential to excel in their field of research and will have excellent organizational ability, verbal and written communication skills. A track record of first-author publications in peer-review journals and previous experience with grant writing is required. Must be able to demonstrate ability to plan and complete work assignments independently. Knowledge of recent advances in pharmacological studies required; previous involvement in such studies an asset. Previous use of large administrative health databases an asset. Familiarity with statistical software and techniques, including Kaplan-Meier/time-dependent Cox proportional hazards model for survival analysis and propensity score methods an asset. Knowledge of MS also an asset. The successful candidate may supervise students and other research personnel.

Open to applicants holding a PhD in epidemiology/ pharmacoepidemiology/biostatistics or other equivalent qualifications or work experience in their field of research.

UBC Hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply. However, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.

Job Title: Research Fellow
Job ID:18309

Full/Part Time: Full-Time

Job Summary
The primary goal of our lab is to understand the functional consequences of human disease causing risk variants. Within the past few years, the majority of common variation in the human genome has been identified and made publicly available, thereby enabling and facilitating the study of complex trait genetics. The genetic architecture of complex disease is being revealed at an unprecedented rate. Many of the disease causing variants happen to lie in non-protein coding regions requiring a systematic and fresh approach to understanding their mechanism. Potential projects entail the application genetic, molecular and cellular biologic techniques to understand the mechanism of known risk alleles. Other projects have a stronger bioinformatic slant, such as exploring the dynamics between the germline and tumor genomes. We are a highly collaborative group and interact closely with geneticists, cancer biologists, epidemiologists, clinicians, and computational biologists to comprehensively understand cancer related phenotypes. Our laboratory is part of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery (CCGD), a cooperative venture of several faculty members who have a strong interest in cancer genomics. This position provides an opportunity to perform cross-disciplinary research in a highly interactive environment. Projects encompass the design of studies and the generation, analysis and interpretation of large scale datasets.

Job Qualifications
PhD with scientific laboratory background required. Previous experience in genomic science and/or a familiarity working with large scale datasets are highly desirable.
