USARIEM: Nutritional Epidemiology Postdoctoral Fellowship
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nutritional Epidemiology
National Research Council
United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM)
Natick, Massachusetts
The Military Nutrition and Military Performance Divisions of the United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM; www.usariem.army.mil) seek a postdoctoral fellow with doctoral training in nutritional epidemiology to lead a one-year project that examines the link between body weight and risk of musculoskeletal injury and metabolic diseases such as diabetes. This cohort analysis will use the Total Army Injury and Health Outcomes Database (TAIHOD), which contains key elements from 20 major Department of Defense administrative and health databases. The TAIHOD contains information on over 5 million active-duty soldiers between 1971 and 2005, including demographic and occupational characteristics, inpatient and outpatient health care utilization, and a variety of health risk behaviors (e.g., smoking, alcohol use) and psychosocial factors (e.g., social support, job satisfaction).
Start date is flexible and continuation is possible. Primary responsibilities will include conceptualizing appropriate criteria for defining the analytic cohort, implementing appropriate statistical analyses using SAS, and writing a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Responsibilities will also include grant proposal development and working with the research group comprised of military and civilian personnel to develop new research questions and identify nutritional data sources for future projects. The ideal candidate will have strong writing and analytic skills, as well as the ability to conceptualize and implement complex projects, to develop productive collaborative relationships, and to envision possible next steps in a research program on nutritional epidemiology. Base stipend is $50,000 per year.
RESTRICTED ELIGIBILITY: This research position is open only to US citizens. Preferred start in Spring/Summer 2007.
