Cambridge, UK: Mathematical Modeller/Postdoctoral Research Associate, Cambridge Infectious Disease Consortium, University of Cambridge
Mathematical Modeller/Postdoctoral Research Associate
Department of Veterinary Medicine
University of Cambridge
£25,134-£32,796
Limit of tenure applies*
The Cambridge Infectious Disease Consortium (CIDC: www.vet.cam.ac.uk/cidc) is a collaborative venture, involving several Cambridge University departments and other research institutes. A major objective of the CIDC is to provide a world-class research environment for the training of veterinarians as infectious disease specialists and to develop research programmes in infectious disease dynamics in collaboration with other CIDC scientists.
Great Britain has experienced a dramatic increase in bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) since the late 1980's, and the Veterinary authorities are looking for ways to improve existing testing and control policies. CIDC, funded by the Veterinary Laboratory Agencies (VLA), has been asked to provide scientific expertise on the issue of "problem herds", i.e. herds with persistent or recurrent positive tests for bovine Tuberculosis.
The post-holder will join a team of mathematical modellers and epidemiologists in the CIDC Disease Dynamics Unit based at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, to develop a modelling framework at the within-herd level and to investigate the effects of various sources of infection, animal movement and testing policies. The results will be used to inform government policy.
Candidates should hold a PhD in Mathematics, Physics or Ecology and have strong experience in developing mathematical models for infectious diseases dynamics. Additional background on bovine tuberculosis or other veterinary diseases would be an advantage but is not essential.
Further information is available from Dr James Wood (email: jlnw2@cam.ac.uk,
Tel. +44 1223 764666). Applicants should complete a PD18 available from www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/personnel/forms/pd18 and send a full CV, a statement of areas of interest and the addresses of 3 referees to Meg Staff (mas32@cam.ac.uk), CIDC Administrator, Department of Veterinary Medicine, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 OES, Tel. +44 (0)1223 765636
* Limit of tenure: 24 months
Closing date: 30 November 2007.
