Postdoctoral Position in Cancer Parmacogenetics

Employer: The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Others)
Location: Houston, TX 77030
Category: Postdoc/Graduate Assistant position of:
Cancer Biology/Oncology
Genetics & Genomics

Posted: Mar. 08, 2008
Job Type: Full-time
Deadline: Open until filled

Description & Requirement
A postdoctoral position in the field of cancer pharmacogenetics is available immediately in Dr. Xifeng Wu’s lab at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to identify clinically relevant biomarkers to predict treatment outcomes of various types of cancer therapy such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and molecularly targeted therapy.

Cancer pharmacogenetics utilizes genetic variation in the human genome and other biological and pathological markers as surrogates of treatment outcome in order to achieve tailored therapy based on specific genetic profile of each cancer patient. Along with the completion of the Human Genome Sequencing Project, the International HapMap Project, and the ongoing Cancer Genome Sequencing Project, the field of cancer pharmacogenetics is expanding rapidly. Successful applicant of this National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded position of postdoctoral fellow will have great opportunities to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of biologists, epidemiologists, statisticians, and clinicians, and to develop multidisciplinary knowledge and techniques in molecular and cellular biology, epidemiology, statistics, genetics, genomics, and cancer medicine. The large collection of biospecimens from a number of cancer types in our laboratory will greatly facilitate the realization of promising novel ideas in the fields of cancer risk assessment, prevention, early detection, and individualized intervention.

For examples of the application of pharmacogenetics in individualized cancer therapy:

• Gefitinib-sensitizing EGFR mutations in lung cancer activate anti-apoptotic pathways. Science. 2004 Aug 20;305(5687):1163-7.

For selected recent publications (from a total of >100) on cancer pharmacogenetics and risk assessment in our lab:

We seek highly motivated individuals who have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree with less than 2 years of postdoctoral experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics, or related fields. Applications, including a resume/curriculum vitae, contact information for three references, and a brief summary of past accomplishments should be sent by regular mail or email to: Xifeng Wu, M.D., Ph.D., Department of Epidemiology, Division of Cancer Prevention and Populational Science, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, 1155 Pressler Blvd. Box 1340, Houston, TX, 77030.
