INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH
Clinical Research Fellowships in Drug Discovery
University of London, Chelsea & Sutton, Surrey
The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London) is a world-class cancer research organisation with HEFCE RAE ratings of international excellence across all of its research programmes. In partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, we form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, dedicated to research that extends from epidemiology, genetics and molecular biology, through drug discovery and development, to cancer diagnosis and patient treatment.
The Institute has been awarded funding from the Wellcome Trust for a new PhD programme. The prestigious scheme, in Mechanism-Based Drug Discovery, will fund 2 Clinical Fellowships per year for the next 4 years. The scheme builds on The Institute’s outstanding track record of
discovering drugs such as carboplatin and abiraterone. Recent discoveries include drugs acting on the molecular targets HSP90, PI3 kinase and AKT. With this experience and specialist knowledge, The Institute is able to provide a unique opportunity for young clinicians to learn the latest approaches in drug discovery and the laboratory programme will be overseen by three of The Institute’s senior scientists in the areas of cancer therapeutics (Professor Paul Workman), structural biology (Professor Laurence Pearl) and medicinal chemistry (Professor Keith Jones)
.Fellows will be trained to work at the cutting-edge of one of these scientific disciplines whilst gaining understanding of other areas. Being able to work across research disciplines is vital in devising new cancer therapies as each area provides essential information. There will be defined
opportunities for relevant clinical work in the Royal Marsden Hospital Drug Development Unit (Professor Stan Kaye); this will provide valuable experience specifically in Phase I trial methodology.
Applications for fellowships starting in 2009 are invited from applicants who have General Medical Council registration, or are eligible for GMC registration. Applicants should have completed general professional training (and have MRCP or equivalent) and have acquired some experience in oncology.
Applications consisting of a CV and covering letter including contact details of 2 referees should be emailed to: registry@icr.ac.uk
For more information about The Institute of Cancer Research and further details about our 2009 Clinical Research Fellowships, please see our website: www.icr.ac.uk
Closing date for applications: 17th November 2008.
All applicants should be available for interview during week commencing 8th December 2008.
