Description
The UCLA AHA-PRT Outcomes Research Center invites applications for two-year postdoctoral research fellowships. This intensive, advanced research training experience will prepare exceptional and highly motivated post-doctoral scholars to become leaders in stroke outcomes research. The UCLA Center’s theme is to address racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in care for and outcomes of stroke and cardiovascular disease among high-risk, underserved populations. The heart of the UCLA training program is immersion of fellows in a stroke outcomes research study that they design and execute under the principal supervision of a primary mentor. Together with one or more secondary mentors, the training program director, and a Research Advisory Committee, the primary mentor will be actively engaged in supporting and guiding the fellow’s research training experience. In the first year, fellows will develop and shape a specific question and research problem from their broader area of interest and develop this into a formal protocol. By the end of the second year, fellows will have completed data collection and analysis, prepared and submitted one or more research articles for publication, and prepared at least one research proposal for outside funding. Each of the center’s two core studies offer excellent opportunities for development of independent research projects by center fellows, or fellows may identify research opportunities with other core faculty at UCLA who are engaged in stroke and cardiovascular disease outcomes research. All eighteen core UCLA Center faculty are committed to and experienced in mentoring outcomes research fellows. Faculty have a broad range of expertise encompassing health disparities, quality of care, health economics, cost-effectiveness analysis, quality measurement, systematic reviews, health outcomes, health-related quality of life, implementation science, biostatistical analysis, and stroke outcomes research. The training program includes substantial (>75%) protected time for research and research training. Fellows are strongly encouraged to pursue advanced training in epidemiology, biostatistics and health services research, with the option of obtaining a master’s degree for those without prior formal training in these disciplines.
