FELLOWSHIPS IN TOBACCO CONTROL RESEARCH
The UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education (CTCRE) invites applications for fellowships in policy-relevant tobacco control research. Completed applications are due January 31, 2008, for fellowships beginning July 1, 2008.
CTCRE represents a partnership between UCSF faculty and the Tobacco Control Archives (TCA) housed in the Kalmanovitz Library. UCSF is a leader in tobacco control research and the TCA was the first to make proprietary, tobacco industry documents accessible on the Internet. In addition, the TCA developed an index and thesaurus for tobacco documents, which have become international standards. Currently, the TCA consists of two digital libraries (Legacy Tobacco Documents Library and the British American Tobacco Documents Archive) as well as paper-based collections. LTDL and BATDA provide Internet access to more than 45 million pages of tobacco documents under the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between the tobacco industry and 46 state attorneys general. The Library ensures that this information remains fully accessible to scholars, health advocates, journalists and the public. Full access is critical to continued research as under terms of the Master Settlement Agreement the tobacco industry may remove existing documents from their own Internet sites in 2008.
PROGRAM PURPOSE
The CTCRE offers two research programs in policy research related to tobacco control.
·Recent MD or PhD recipients: postdoctoral trainees will receive an annual salary commensurate with their experience, approximately $37,000-$51,000, according to the NIH stipend scale. These positions are supported by an R25T NIH training grant.
·Advanced or senior scholars: postgraduate trainees will receive an annual salary commensurate with their experience and subject to funding availability. Sources of funding may include support from the scholar's home institution, faculty-mentor funding, or an R25T NIH training grant.
Trainees will be recruited from a variety of fields including basic science, social science, public health, clinical science, political science, history, economics, law and marketing. They will study and conduct research in association with UCSF faculty mentors. Applicants may learn more about the Center, the fellowship program, and review the list of UCSF faculty and their research interests at our website: http://tobacco.ucsf.edu.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The National Institutes of Health stipulates that candidates usually must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the U.S., or be lawfully admitted for permanent residence. Candidates will be asked to submit a completed application, a statement of purpose and interest in researching tobacco industry documents, a description of research experience, a summary of career objectives, references and writing samples. Following initial review, candidates will be interviewed by the Selection Committee. Applications are due Jan. 31, 2008, for fellowships beginning July 1, 2008.
