Postdoctoral Researcher Position

Postdoctoral Researcher to participate in epidemiological study of body composition and cardiovascular disease risk factors. Primary focus is analyzing data collected in ongoing studies and to collaborate on manuscripts. Opportunities exist for expanding the scope of the research. Doctorate required by starting date in: epidemiology, genetic epidemiology sports medicine, biostatistics, exercise physiology, anthropology, human biology, nutrition, or a related field. Analytical background and research interests compatible with existing researchers preferred. Ability to work independently and cooperatively within a team of established investigators is essential. Current research interests within this team include genetic epidemiology, aging, biostatistical methods for serial analyses and the role of changes in body composition throughout the life span in the development of cardiovascular and other age-related diseases. A Research Assistant/Associate is sought, to analyse and enhance cancer registration and healthcare-related routine datasets; and to help with the design and analysis of patient education interventions on cancer treatment choices and outcomes. The post-holder will work closely with a Clinical Senior Research Associate (Dr Lyratzopoulos) and will have a working relationship with the Cancer Registry of the East of England (ECRIC/Eastern Cancer Registration and Information Centre) and the Eastern Region Public Health Observatory (ERPHO). Candidates should possess a postgraduate qualification in statistics (or a closely-related discipline) and/or have relevant experience and advanced knowledge and experience of statistical analysis and database management software.

The Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge is one of the UK's premier population health sciences university departments, awarded the highest possible ratings in the five-yearly UK-wide research assessment exercise (RAE) for the last 15 years. ECRIC is a regional UK cancer registry, covering a population of about 5.5 m with an excellent quality assurance record and a track record in research collaborations and research outcomes. ERPHO is a regional UK public health observatory, specialising in the surveillance of population health trends and in the use of routine statistics and datasets to inform policy making.

Association of Schools of Public Health, Public Health Training Opportunities at CDC

ASPH Announces Public Health Training Opportunities at CDC

ASPH is pleased to offer graduate degree candidates and early career professionals with graduate degrees from ASPH member schools of public health 25 new and exciting training opportunities within the ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program. ASPH is also pleased to announce the availability of funds to support seven new public health internship opportunities at the CDC for summer 2008. The deadline for applications for the ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program is February 12, 2008. The deadline for the ASPH/CDC/ATSDR Public Health Internship Program is February 1, 2008. ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program Selected fellows will complete their training experience at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, or at CDC geographical locations throughout the United States. Fellowship positions are full-time opportunities whose duration is for a one year period (July 2008-July 2009). Fellowships may be extended for an additional year, pending available funding and mutual agreement by the fellow, CDC, and ASPH.

Students receiving their MPH or Doctorate degree prior to the beginning of the fellowship (no later than June 2008) and early career professionals with MPH or Doctorate degrees may apply for the fellowship program. Applicants must be affiliated with an Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) member graduate school of public health accredited by the council on Education for Public Health (a list of accredited ASPH member schools can be accessed via the ASPH website at [ http://www.asph.org/ ]www.asph.org. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or hold a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S. to be eligible for the fellowship program. ASPH/CDC/ATSDR Public Health Internship Program The internships will begin on June 2, 2008 for a 10-week training period. Any full or part-time student enrolled in a master's or doctoral level degree program at any ASPH-member, CEPH-accredited school of public health is permitted to apply. Applicants may apply for up to three different internships. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or hold a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S. to be eligible for the fellowship program.

A project is available in the Division of Adult and Community Health within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The selected ORISE participant will assist with surveillance and research activities for the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) Surveillance Team, which includes a program analyst, a public health advisor, and a medical epidemiologist.

Responsibilities:

The HRQOL Surveillance Team and its public health partners have developed and validated a compact set of Healthy Days measures that describe and track the overall perceived physical and mental health of populations over time. Healthy Days core measures are included annually on the state-based Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and the Medicare Health Outcome Survey. The CDC HRQOL Web site at http://w ww.cdc.gov/hrqol describes these and other CDC HRQOL measures and how they have been used in research and surveillance.

The HRQOL Surveillance participant would assist in one or more of these areas:
• Development of a national, state, and local surveillance system for tracking HRQOL among U.S. residents.

• Development, validation, and refinement of HRQOL measures for use in tracking and prevention research at each stage of life.

• Identification of new opportunities around HRQOL intervention research, evaluation, and program development.

Requirements:

Applicants should have a Master’s of Public Health or other science or health-related master’s degree. Applicants should have training or experience in one or more of these disciplines: population health assessment, health-related quality of life or health outcomes measurement, surveillance methods, psychometrics, program evaluation methods, health economics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or community mental health. The applicant should have both masters-level statistical expertise and scientific writing skills. Experience with analysis of one or more large datasets and primary authorship of a related peer-reviewed publication and/or doctoral dissertation are preferred.

The appointment is for up to one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and subject to availability of funds. The participant will receive an annual stipend depending on background and experience. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The appointment is full time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: postdoctoral infectious disease epidemiologist, Asia-Pacific Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Hawaii

The Asia-Pacific Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in partnership with the Pasture Institute in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, and the Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative in Seoul, Korea, is seeking a postdoctoral-level infectious disease epidemiologist.

The applicant should have a Ph.D. in infectious disease epidemiology or an MD with epidemiology training or experience. This is 3-year entry-level project-funded position. Job location is on site in Ho Chi Minh City and in nearby My To City.

Briefly, the job description is to oversee the implementation of an active surveillance project on dengue virus infection among 5- to 10-year old children in My Tho City.
