AN IMMEDIATE NIDA/NIMH POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP OPENING AVAILABLE

Two post-doctoral fellowship positions are available in the NIDA-sponsored Training Program in Drug Abuse Comorbidity, Prevention and Biostatistics, and NIMH-sponsored Training Program in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Biostatistics, both at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are eligible. The Department of Psychiatry is internationally recognized for its pioneer work in substance abuse and psychiatric epidemiology, as well as for genetic epidemiology of psychiatric and substance use disorders. Comprehensive training is available in biostatistics, prevention, epidemiology, comorbidity, services research, infectious diseases, and public health risk factors; and additional tracks are available for genetics and neuroscience training. Multiple mentors can be chosen from a pool of more than two dozen training faculty members. Interdisciplinary post-doctoral projects incorporating both biomedical and behavioral/social science approaches are particularly encouraged. Qualified applicants may elect to pursue a Master in Psychiatric Epidemiology (MPE) degree or a Genetic Epidemiology Master of Science (GEMS) degree. We seek a post-doctoral Research Associate to join an interdisciplinary CRUK funded project to develop data mining methods for cancer research. Among the aims is the development of novel statistical methods for integration and interpretation of diverse high throughput genomic datasets, including expression, arrayCGH, microRNA and SNP data. The post will be based in the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute (CRI), home to 16 research groups and associated core facilities that embrace a multidisciplinary approach to cancer research (see www.cambridgecancer.org.uk/).

The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent in biological sciences, with a strong quantitative focus. Experience in computational statistics and strong programming skills in languages such as R, Matlab or C++ is required. Familiarity with statistical analysis of microarray data, database management and cluster computing are strongly desirable.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), the largest Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is pleased to invite applications from qualified candidates for a one-year post-doctoral position in the area of evaluation with an emphasis on transdisciplinary research and collaboration.
This is a full-time position within the Behavioral Research Program of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) of the National Cancer Institute and will be based in their Rockville, Maryland office. The position will allow the applicant to interact with a large number of scientists representing the disciplines of medicine, basic sciences, psychology, epidemiology, public health, nursing, social work, sociology, and medical anthropology at the NCI, the NIH and at institutions around the country.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary responsibility for assisting in all aspects of the Evaluation of Large Initiatives (ELI) project in the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences of the National Cancer Institute. The recipient of this position will:

· manage all information connected to the project; prepare information for and take part in all project team meetings;
· collect and analyze data pertaining to transdisciplinary processes and outcomes at existing and/or newly emerging NCI transdisciplinary research centers;
· develop and submit manuscripts reporting results from ongoing research projects;
· provide consultative input and expertise on all matters;
· assist the team in developing and presenting training modules at professional meetings, NIH-wide conferences, and NCI Research Centers retreats;
· help with the development and implementation of new transdisciplinary collaboration assessment tools and the refinement of existing protocols for measuring transdisciplinary collaboration processes and outcomes;
· assist team members with the editing of manuscripts submitted for journal supplements and monographs focusing on topics related to the science of team science; and
· assist team members in developing and maintaining an NCI-based web site that would offer transdisciplinary research assessment tools, prior publications, and other resources for public access;

Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in program evaluation or related applied management or a social science research area is desired. The candidate should have a strong interest in program evaluation methods applied within the context of ?big science' initiatives. Knowledge and experience in program evaluation and evaluation research is preferred, though training in this area will be supported. Candidates must have familiarity with a broad array of social research methods and demonstrate expertise in and understanding of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The candidate also must demonstrate understanding of the organizational context for evaluation and of the different ways evaluation procedures can be integrated into that context. Strong interpersonal skills are required as this is a collaborative, team-based effort. The candidate must be a self-starter who is comfortable taking the initiative and who can play a major role in helping to bring several projects to completion.

In order to qualify for the position, the candidate must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. A candidate with an I-551 stamp in their passport can also qualify since this is temporary verification of permanent residency status pending issuance of the green card. Individuals with "Employment Authorization" documents (EADs) do not meet eligibility criteria.

Stipend/Benefits:
This position is a one-year full-time Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) position that will start whenever a candidate has been identified. There is a possibility for yearly renewals. Stipend is commensurate with relevant work experience and education. The stipend range for those with a doctoral degree is $40,800 to $63,300, depending on education and experience. Health benefits are available. Some flexibility in work hours will be allowed. Participation in conferences and continued training in evaluation methods is encouraged and supported.

Position Description: The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), located in Hyattsville, Maryland, is seeking an Associate Service Fellow to work with the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) Team. NCHS is the nation’s principal health statistics agency. The Associate Service Fellow, working closely with the NSFG Team, will contribute to all aspects of conducting the survey and disseminating the survey data. The NSFG Team is responsible for collecting, processing, and disseminating data on a variety of topics related to birth and pregnancy rates; contraception and fertility; marriage, divorce, and cohabitation; sexual activity; and HIV risk behaviors. Under the guidance of other members of the NSFG team, the Associate Service Fellow will develop and formulate questionnaire specifications and review training materials; plan and conduct methodological and evaluation studies related to data collection; provide technical consultation and advice to users of the data; and prepare reports of survey activities and results for NCHS reports and scientific journals. These reports include discussion of statistical methods.

Qualifications: This fellowship is open to all citizens of the United States or legal permanent residents with a work authorization. Applicants are responsible for obtaining the necessary work authorization. Applicants must have successfully completed a master’s degree or higher in demography, survey methodology, epidemiology, public health, or a related field (e.g. sociology, medicine, biological or health sciences, etc). Experience and/or applied coursework in (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as simple and multiple correlation, regression modeling, analysis of variance, and significance testing is highly desirable. Skill in using SAS, STATA, SPSS, SUDAAN, or other statistical software for complex survey data is also expected. Strong speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills are also highly desirable.

2008 Epidemic Intelligence Service Conference Scholarships

2008 EIS Conference Scholarships Available

The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Alumni Association announces the availability of scholarships to participate in the 2008 EIS Conference to be held in Atlanta, GA, April 14 to 18, 2008. Up to eight scholarships of $800 each will be awarded to partially subsidize participation in the Conference. Acceptance of a scholarship does not obligate the recipient to apply for the EIS, but indicates an interest in considering applying for a position in the EIS within the next 2-3 years. Eligibility

Persons who would be eligible to serve in the EIS in the next 2-3 years.

Eligibility for EIS includes:
* physicians with at least one year of clinical training;
* Ph.D., Dr.P.H., or doctoral-degree holders in epidemiology, biostatistics, the social or behavioral sciences or the nutrition sciences;
* dentists, physician assistants and nurses with M.P.H. or equivalent degree; and

We are seeking qualified and highly motivated US citizens or permanent residents who would like to obtain post-doctoral research experience and training in reproductive, perinatal, and pediatric epidemiology (RPPE) in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington. This position is supported by a T32 training grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The purpose of this training program at the University of Washington is to provide skills in epidemiology and biostatistics that will enable fellows to develop careers in RPPE. Specifically, we plan to provide fellows with training in multidisciplinary theories, epidemiologic methods as well as the practical skills to design and conduct high quality research in reproductive, perinatal, and pediatric epidemiology.

Applicants with a background in biomedical and behavioral sciences, including, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, nutritional biochemistry, child psychology, social work, molecular biology, or a related discipline are encouraged to apply. The post-doctoral fellowship is offered for one year with opportunity for renewal the second year, contingent upon performance. Annual stipend for post-doctoral fellows is based on the NIH scale depending on years since award of doctoral or medical degree. In addition, health insurance is provided.

The Cancer Research Training Award provides an outstanding opportunity for an individual with a strong interest in health promotion and cancer control to gain experience working as an extramural behavioral scientist at the National Cancer Institute.

Position Description

The trainee will function as a member of the HPRB and work directly with HPRB scientists on projects related to the HPRB mission. Areas of research include obesity prevention, nutrition and physical activity intervention and assessment, skin cancer prevention (sun protection and sun exposure research), and health disparities issues. Day-to-day activities might include conducting literature reviews; performing data analyses and preparing scientific manuscripts; aiding in the development of Program Announcements or other initiatives; analyzing the HPRB research portfolio; participating in HPRB meetings; and attending lectures or other training opportunities sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Additionally, the trainee may have opportunities to initiate and develop his or her own projects, as well as work with other scientific staff at the National Cancer Institute and other Institutes/Centers at the National Institutes of Health.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent degree in public health, health promotion,

behavioral sciences, nutrition, health psychology, or a related discipline

• A strong interest in health promotion specifically focused in primary

prevention and nutrition, obesity prevention, health disparities research and/or skin cancer prevention.

• Experience conducting research or serving as a research assistant on

a scientific project

• Excellent organizational, planning, writing, and project management

skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• The ability to work independently and on research teams

• Data management skills (proficiency with EXCEL and statistical

software packages is preferred)

Stipend and Benefits

The trainee stipend is commensurate with education and experience. The stipend range for a trainee with a doctoral degree is $44,300 – 56,900, depending on years of relevant post-doctoral experience. Health benefits are available. Some flexibility on work hours will be allowed.

Participation in conferences and continued training is encouraged.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Prevention Research Center of Michigan (PRC/MI) is to create and foster knowledge resulting in more effective public health programs and policies. The Center conducts community-based prevention research to improve health and prevent disease, especially focused on populations with a disproportionate share of poor health outcomes. The PRC/MI is a partnership of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, community-based organizations, local health departments, the Michigan Department of Community Health, and health service and advocacy groups.

The post doctoral scholar will be a member of the PRC/MI management team. He or she will participate in research projects and program evaluations, provide technical assistance to community organizations and agencies, assist with grant proposal writing, and author publications and other research products. The post doctoral scholar will be encouraged to develop his/her own prevention research projects.

Duties:

 Work collaboratively with the PRC/MI faculty and staff, and the Community and State Boards to advance the goals and objectives of the PRC/MI.

 Assist in proposals to federal, state and local funding agencies in collaboration with community, public health practice, policy and academic partners.

 Participate in the evaluation of the PRC/MI research projects, including data collection, management and analyses.

 Provide technical assistance to community organization partners in preparing grant proposals, designing evaluation plans and analyzing and interpreting data.

 Produce publications for peer reviewed journals as first or collaborating author.

 Produce research reports and presentations for academic, community, and policy audiences

 Supervise graduate student assistants.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in public health, behavioral science or related discipline. Strong interest in working in partnership with community-based organizations. Excellent communication and collaborative skills. Training or experience in applied research methods including evaluation design, quantitative and qualitative data analyses, and research proposal development. Evidence of scholarship, including publications and involvement in funded research is desired.

NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mental Health Services Research for Older Adults
Fellowship Director: Martha L. Bruce, PhD, MPH

Dr. Bruce is a Professor of Sociology in Psychiatry and Associate Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry, Weill Medical College of Cornell University and in the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences. A sociologist and psychiatric epidemiologist, Dr. Bruce conducts community-based services research aimed at improving access to quality mental health among vulnerable older adults suffering from depression. Description of Program: This NIMH-funded (T-32) two-year postdoctoral Research Training Program provides fellowship training in health services research for older adults with mental disorders. The program is designed for psychiatrists, medical physicians, psychologists, and social/behavioral scientists who are committed to becoming independently supported mental health services researchers. Fellows will spend two years: ·working with expert faculty mentors in mental health services research and participating in ongoing research ·participating in local and national seminars with Dartmouth University ( Director, Dr. Steven Bartels) and Washington University (Director, Dr. Jürgen Unützer) ·participating in research presentations, and conferences for postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty in mental health services research ·developing their own research projects/grants under the mentorship of Dr. Bruce and/or other core faculty members.
