Branch:
Epidemiology and Biomarkers Branch
Geographical Location of position:
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Title of Project:
Environmental Public Health Indicators: Development and Validation
Brief Description of Research Project:
EPA is actively engaged in research on the development and validation of environmental public health indicators that can be tracked over time to identify environmental risks and to evaluate the public health benefit of the Agency’s environmental and regulatory actions/programs. Research challenges involve multiple health outcomes, including infant and adult mortality and gastro-intestinal outbreaks; multiple pollutants, multiple sources, multiple ambient media (air, water, land), and multiple routes of exposure; the impact of health disparities; the role of genetic susceptibility and gene-environment interactions; and the application of biological indicators. Utilizing both existing administrative record systems and new data collections, EPA has several on-going research projects to develop methods, tools, and models as proof of concept studies. These projects include the development of an environmental quality index; the development of new indicators for EPA’s Report on the Environment (http://www.epa.gov/indicators/); the development of a national estimate of enteric disease; and the multi-city, multi-pollutant modeling of the temporal-spatial association between mortality and air pollution. The successful candidate will be an epidemiologist interested in developing skills in exposure assessment or an exposure modeler/toxicologist interested in developing skills in epidemiology and will possess strong quantitative and analytic skills.
High Priority Research Area(s):
Human Health Research, Human Health Risk Assessment, Clean Air Research, Drinking Water Research
Projected duration of appointment (2 or 3 years):
3 years
Educational requirements:
Ph.D. or other doctorate in Epidemiology, Public Health, Medicine, Toxicology, Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
Specialized training and/or experience preferred:
Experience with large administrative record systems, studies of health disparities, and the development of environmental public health indicators is preferred and/or familiarity with varied statistical analyses, modeling health and/or modeling environmental exposure.
