Job Title: Research Fellow
Job ID:18309

Full/Part Time: Full-Time
Regular/Temporary:Regular

Job Summary
The primary goal of our lab is to understand the functional consequences of human disease causing risk variants. Within the past few years, the majority of common variation in the human genome has been identified and made publicly available, thereby enabling and facilitating the study of complex trait genetics. The genetic architecture of complex disease is being revealed at an unprecedented rate. Many of the disease causing variants happen to lie in non-protein coding regions requiring a systematic and fresh approach to understanding their mechanism. Potential projects entail the application genetic, molecular and cellular biologic techniques to understand the mechanism of known risk alleles. Other projects have a stronger bioinformatic slant, such as exploring the dynamics between the germline and tumor genomes. We are a highly collaborative group and interact closely with geneticists, cancer biologists, epidemiologists, clinicians, and computational biologists to comprehensively understand cancer related phenotypes. Our laboratory is part of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery (CCGD), a cooperative venture of several faculty members who have a strong interest in cancer genomics. This position provides an opportunity to perform cross-disciplinary research in a highly interactive environment. Projects encompass the design of studies and the generation, analysis and interpretation of large scale datasets.

Job Qualifications
PhD with scientific laboratory background required. Previous experience in genomic science and/or a familiarity working with large scale datasets are highly desirable.

NIH/NIA/MRC London, UK: Post-doctoral fellowship in Life Course Epidemiology, MRC National Survey of Health and Development

Post-doctoral fellowship in Life Course Epidemiology is being jointly sponsored by the National Institute on Aging at the NIH and the Medical Research Council Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing (LHA) in the U.K. This fellowship provides the trainee the opportunity to utilize one of the leading life course epidemiologic research studies in the world and to train with mentors who have extensive experience doing this kind of research.

Fellows in this program will spend the first year in London working with Professor Diana Kuh and the second year in Bethesda in Dr. Jack Guralnik’s intramural research laboratory at NIA. Research will focus on issues related to aging and will utilize the MRC National Survey of Health and Development, commonly known as the British 1946 Birth Cohort Study, as well as other cohorts that have life course data relevant to the research. We are just beginning to learn how the life course influences the aging process, the probability of living both a long and a healthy life, and the onset of certain conditions and diseases of old age. The 1946 Birth Cohort Study has the potential to provide major contributions to our knowledge of lifetime predictors of cognitive function, physical function and disability, depression, bone health, arthritis, heart disease and pulmonary disease in old age. Utilizing this data base, there is excellent potential for post-doctoral fellows to produce high impact research papers that will help them establish a successful research career.

Suitable candidates for this fellowship should have a PhD or an MD with an MPH or MS with training in epidemiology, demography or a related field. To qualify, your most recent degree should have been conferred in the past five years. Interested candidates should send a letter of interest and a CV to Jack.Guralnik@nih.gov or write to Dr. Jack Guralnik at the address listed below. We will close applications on March 23, 2009.
