Position Description: Under the direction of the Director of the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc. (ITCA) Epidemiology Center (Epi Center), the Epidemiologist will perform the following: (i) data collection, transfer, storage, quality control and quality assurance; (ii) maintain data confidentiality; (iii) analyze, prepare reports and interpret health data from primary and existing data sources. This position will be responsible to design, manage and maintain databases; provide training, consultation, and assistance to operating tribal health program-managers and health employees; conduct epidemiologic studies, coordinate community health research and training as needed; provide assistance to others in the design of tribal surveillance systems and epidemiologic projects, and assist in program development.

Qualifications: 1) The successful candidate must posses a Masters of Science in Epidemiology or Masters of Public Health with the emphasis on bio-statistics and a high-level of technical knowledge gained in the completion of the graduate degree, with a minimum of two years of field experience in epidemiology or public health; 2) Must be able to use at least one of the professional statistical software such as, SAS, SPSS, Stata; and be able to use other software as Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Power Point; and must be willing to learn other appropriate software; 3) Sensitive to tribal cultures; be able to assess and respond timely to tribal Community needs, and promote the development of disease prevention and intervention programs; 4) Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and be able to correspond with the public health professionals by telecommunication, internet as well as in writing; 5) Experience in applied community- based research is strongly desired; 6) Knowledge and experience to perform quality epidemiologic research and consultation with American Indian tribes, and to work respectfully and cooperatively with others; 7) Must have a valid Arizona driver’s license and be able and willing to travel to tribes in Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

Organization Description: The Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc. (ITCA) was established in 1952 to provide a united voice for Indian tribes located in the State of Arizona, USA to address common issues of concern. On July 9, 1975, the council established a private, non-profit corporation incorporated under the laws of the State of Arizona to promote Indian self- reliance through public policy development. The ITCA has an Executive Board of Directors elected from its membership of the tribes in Arizona who oversee and approve the activities of the organization. The members of ITCA are the highest elected tribal officials - the tribal Chairmen, tribal Presidents, and tribal Governors. There are about 46 tribal, state and federal programs including three Centers administered and operated by the ITCA. The Epidemiology Center, one of the three centers, was established in 1997 by the U.S. DHHS, Indian Health Service.
