Position Description: The Center for Vaccine Development, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland is conducting a multi-center study of the etiology and burden of severe diarrheal disease among infants and young children living in developing countries of Asia and Africa. The study is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is intended to provide data needed to guide development and implementation of enteric vaccines and other public health interventions that can diminish morbidity and mortality from diarrheal diseases. Eight sites in S Asia and sub-Saharan Africa have been selected. This position will require an epidemiologist with experience in conducting demographic surveillance and infectious disease field research in developing countries. Extensive travel to each of the sites in Africa and South Asia is anticipated. Excellent planning, management, problem-solving capabilities, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to give direction and guidance are required. Knowledge of foreign language(s) is desirable.
Essential duties will include: • Serve as the coordinating center’s point person for progress at each field site • Liason between the sites and the epidemiology/clinical coordinator at the Center for Vaccine Development • Travel internationally, as required, estimated 20 percent • Develop data collection tools, a manual of procedures and quality management plans to standardize the conduct of the study at each site • Provide oversight and training in demographic, clinical, and epidemiologic procedures to personnel at each site to assure high quality data collection • Evaluate site performance, track progress according to targets, identify problems and initiate corrective actions, communicate with both staff and leadership at the sites • Facilitate expeditious data collection and analysis, prepare reports, presentations, and publications with opportunities for independent research initiatives.
Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent in epidemiology, public health, or related category or an MD or equivalent with MPH or MS in epidemiology or related field is strongly preferred.
