Senior Scientist/Scientist - Animal virology research

The National Veterinary Institute now invites applications from exceptional candidates for a position as Senior Scientist in the Department of Virology at Lindholm. The position is on a permanent basis and the Department will support exceptional candidates with start-up funds and technical assistance for the first 1-3 years after which most activities are expected to be funded from external grants.

The likely candidate holds a biological relevant degree (in particular we encourage Veterinarians to apply) together with a PhD including solid experimental experience in e.g. virology or molecular biology, detailed quantitative studies, field and molecular epidemiology and likely working experience in virology, diagnostics, pathology or epidemiology.

A positive attitude and good interpersonal skills are essential. An evaluation of the applicants' scientific qualifications will be carried out in accordance with current regulations.

The scientist will participate in research on foot-and-mouth disease and possible other virus vesicular diseases of livestock in close collaboration with the Head of Section for Vesicular Virus Diseases, Research Professor Søren Alexandersen, as well as a number of Senior and Junior Scientists in the Section. The Section is currently moving to a newly build, state-of-the-art facility with maximum containment for safe experimental work on highly infectious animal viruses, in particular foot-and-mouth disease virus. The new unit also includes dedicated small and large animal facilities as well as complete laboratory facilities, post mortem room and technical installations to assure safe operation.

The successful Senior Scientist will be expected to help jump start the research facilities in the facility in particular in close collaboration with the Research Professor and to develop a top-level international research area within foot-and-mouth disease while still keeping the work useful for the national and international authorities funding most of the work. The selected candidate will have a considerable degree of freedom to select the specific area of interest, however, it must be stressed that the activities in the new facility should all be well coordinated and give an optimal scientific and applied outcome.

The Senior Scientist is expected to produce international publications describing results obtained. In addition, the Senior Scientist are also expected to participate with maybe 25% of his/her time in the other ongoing activities of the laboratory aimed at advancing the scientific understanding of the pathogenesis, excretion, persistence and transmission of foot-and-mouth disease in close reference to Research Professor Søren Alexandersen.

Terms of employment are according to the relevant collective agreement for academics.

The place of work is Lindholm Island between Moen and Zealand.

Due to work with virus diseases not occurring in Denmark (OIE (former) list A diseases) the employee is not allowed to hold or get in contact with cloven-hoofed animals or have commercial poultry farming. Furthermore no one in the household is allowed to work with cloven-hoofed animals. More detailed information on these restrictions may be obtained from The National Veterinary Institute.
