Position Description: The Bureau of communicable Disease of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has an opening for a research scientist in our Data Analysis and Syndromic Surveillance Unit. We are seeking someone with statistical and software experience including MS Access and SAS, who is motivated to learn about infectious disease epidemiology and surveillance, database development and management, and geographical information systems.
The individual will: - Analyze surveillance data to uncover disease aberrations and unusual trends - Provide data management and analytical support to staff conducting infectious disease investigations - Write, adapt and debug SAS programs for statistical analysis including time-trend analysis, automated outbreak detection algorithms, and spatial and space-time cluster analysis - Work with our syndromic data systems and conduct research into outbreak detection methodology - Participate in the BCD weekly research scientist rotation that provides analytical support for outbreak investigations - Prepare reportable disease surveillance reports for the New York State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Respond to ad hoc requests for data - Produce disease maps - Create and maintain databases - Evaluate electronic clinical data transmission - Create BCD website content, including graphs and maps - Write summary reports and research papers describing surveillance methodologies and results and participate in conferences, meetings, and seminars related to infectious disease surveillance - Contribute to planning and implementing surveillance and epidemiologic activities during the agency's response to public health emergencies.
Qualifications: At least one year full-time experience using SAS and ACCESS or equivalent. Demonstrated aptitude for designing, maintaining, manipulating and analyzing high-quality public health databases. Knowledge of and interest in infectious diseases. Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills. Experience with MS-SQL, ArcMAP and geocoding techniques desired. Webpage design experience and knowledge of HTML are a plus.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 1. A Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one (1) year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or 2. A Master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three (3) years of responsible full-time experience in the appropriate field of specialization, including one (1) year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or 3. Education and/or experience that is equivalent to (1) or (2) above. However, all candidates must have a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and one (1) year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative, or research capacity as described in (2) above.
