Under general supervision of Manager or Director, Epidemiology-BARDS, provides support in the planning, execution, progress reporting, control analysis, and summarization of results from epidemiologic research studies conducted within MRL, handling assigned duties and trouble-shooting to ensure that objectives of the epidemiologic research program are met in a timely manner. Works closely with Clinical Research, Regulatory, Biostatistics, Corporate Computer Resources and personnel at external investigator sites in coordinating activities for epidemiologic research programs.

1. Coordinates in all aspects of epidemiologic research studies, including preparation of the study protocol and design of studies, ordering and shipping of all equipment and supplies, design and preparation of data collection forms, tabulating data and preparing data summaries for regulatory submissions, publications and technical reports. Effectively describes complex procedures for epidemiologic studies to outside investigators and their staff, and assists in study coordination, correspondence, progress reporting, minutes of key meetings, documentation and training of outside staff conducting epidemiologic studies funded by MRL. Maintains up-to-date reference documents or database identifying status, documents and other correspondence pertinent to epidemiologic programs.
2. Participates or directs others in file checking and data screening and audit of epidemiologic data to ensure high quality data collection, data entry and transfer techniques for epidemiologic data. Describes more complex programming needs to professional programmers and complex statistical analyses to statisticians in other MRL areas, . Requires a basic knowledge of statistics, diverse computer systems, data retrieval processes, programming and database designs of resources within MRL and national public domain databases.
3. Independently develops software to process, retrieve, and summarize epidemiologic data, performing statistical calculations in consult with MRL Biostatisticians and Manager, Epidemiology from national, external and internal sources. Summarizes research results in written reports or oral presentations.
4. Prepares oral presentations and written reports to effectively communicate results of epidemiologic studies to more senior staff members, and to Merck project teams, management, and individual investigators. Prepares abstracts and manuscripts for presentation at professional scientific meetings and submission to peer-reviewed journals, and makes seminar presentations. Participates in training of new members of Epidemiology.
5. Identifies technical problems arising in conduct and analysis of epidemiologic studies and pursues solutions. Participates with Manager, in discussions with corresponding technical personnel at regulatory agencies and with clinical investigators, taking initiative in developing resolution or substudy protocols to address technical problems when assigned. Organizes own efforts to achieve goals, reporting progress toward goals to Manager. Maintains technical skills by reading journals and attending professional society meetings. Communicates with epidemiologists and other professionals outside Merck concerning technical problems.



Qualifications
Master's degree preferred in epidemiology (or closely related discipline, such as biostatistics, biometry, public health or biological sciences) or Bachelor's degree plus three years related job experience, or equivalent experience. Exposure to statistics and basic sciences and/or medical research. Must have strong communication and organizational skills. Academic or practical experience in experimental design, and a basic knowledge of epidemiologic research, including statistics commonly used in epidemiologic studies desired. Familiar with basic operation of mainframe / personal computer systems, and more than one computer language or software package used to process epidemiologic data
