DEFINITION:
Under general direction, plans, designs, and implements epidemiological research projects; analyzes and interprets statistical data to monitor and identify results of county-wide health studies, populations at risk, and community environmental factors causing disease; and performs related duties as required.

Real world/real time investigation with a strong emphasis on communicable disease, outbreak investigations and identification of emerging trends.
Examples of Duties:
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Interprets and analyzes statistical data for public health managers and advises them of implications of the data for public health policy; defines the type of data to gather for surveys; gathers and reviews current statistical literature; defines populations of interest to develop health studies for specific groups in the county, and develops statistical and technical summary reports based on surveys.
2. Implements epidemiological research projects; plans, coordinates, and directs collection, coding, and entry of data; develops and maintains computerized databases to monitor the current health status of target groups.
3. Evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of intervention or control strategies; and determines health status outcomes in order to ensure that established program standards are met.
4. Consults with personnel from within the department, other County departments, public and private community agencies, and health providers to coordinate surveillance of health data.
Employment Standards:
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
1) Possession of a master’s degree in epidemiology or biostatistics from an accredited university; or
2) possession of a master’s degree in public health with specialization in epidemiology or biostatistics from an accredited university; or
3) a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Knowledge Of:
Principles and methods of biostatistics and demography; principles, theories, and procedures of epidemiology, including study design, statistical analysis, and causal inference; current research and trends in public health; appropriate computer processing methods used to generate, organize and display statistical and research data; and standard English grammar, spelling, and usage.
Ability To:
Apply mathematical formulas and make calculations; select and apply appropriate statistical methods for collecting and summarizing varied and complex field data; gather, organize, analyze, and report epidemiological and biostatistical data; evaluate possible intervention strategies; apply epidemiological and biostatistical design method theories and advanced statistical analysis; design, develop, and maintain manual and/or computerized databases; use computer software programs to perform statistical analysis; read and understand complex technical information in mathematical or diagrammatical form; speak and write clearly, concisely, and logically; and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with representatives from other departments, general public, and outside organizations

Review Process:
1. Review applications to determine those candidates who meet the employment standards.
Applicants must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the application review to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list. If you waive employment consideration on three separate occasions during the life of this employment list, the Human Resources Department will remove your name from the list. The Human Resources Department will notify you by mail if your name is removed.
Prior to appointment, the appointee must pass a post-offer medical evaluation or examination and submit written documentation of his/her legal right to work in the United States. The appointee must satisfactorily complete a probationary period.
