Position Description: The Uniformed Services University (USU) is seeking a non-tenure track Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics (PMB), Office of the Director of Graduate Programs, for a position involving teaching, research, and administrative assignments, as required to support the mission of the PMB Department. Moreover, the incumbent will be specifically responsible for supporting the Practicum and Independent Project Programs for PMB Masters' degree graduate candidates.
Activities related to the Practicum portion of the position will include the following: schedule annual 108-hour practicum experiences for PMB Masters' degree candidates; interact with diverse group of public health professionals at various practicum sites to establish inter- organizational relationships; provide program oversight and be responsible for identifying suitable practicum sites, designing appropriate practicum experiences, assisting students with the development of suitable learning objectives and establishing methods by which they will be met. Activities related to the Independent Project portion of the position will include the following: monitor the development and execution of independent research projects for Masters' degree candidates to ensure compliance with federal and institutional regulations pertaining to student research; advise graduate students on appropriate procedures to comply with institutional oversight of their independent projects by USUHS Office of Research, the Institutional Review Board, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, among other assurance committees; evaluate each research proposal for content and clarity as well as for regulatory compliance; monitor student research progress to identify problems and provide appropriate guidance; coordinate faculty evaluations of each written independent research project and oral presentations; and ensure successful completion of independent projects within required timelines, including all procedures for study close-out.
Qualifications: The optimal candidate will possess a M.D. or Ph.D. degree plus substantial experience in educational administration, mentoring of graduate student research activities, graduate school teaching, personnel management, and research and development expertise and experience. An active membership in scholarly societies appropriate to the mission of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics and experience with medical applications of electronic data processing is desired. Outstanding oral and written communication skills are critical.
Selected candidates will be subject to a security background investigation for employment. If the selectee is unable to meet the requirements of a security background investigation, the tentative offer of employment will be rescinded, or if employment has started, the selectee may be discharged.
Organization Description: The Department is comprised of six postgraduate divisions (Tropical Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health Services Administration, Behavioral Sciences, and Aerospace Medicine) as well as two medical residency programs (General Preventive Medicine and Environmental and Occupational Medicine). The Department has 45 full-time faculty and approximately 45 additional adjunct faculty engaged in a wide variety of research projects relevant to public health. The Department has approximately 50 Masters' and 10 Doctoral degree students.
