External Posting Job Description The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety (LMRIS) is seeking highly qualified candidates for a strategic research management position: Director, Center for Injury Epidemiology (CIE). This position will serve as a senior member of the management team. The Director will be responsible for leading and managing the CIE multi-disciplinary staff of research scientists. The Director achieves research outcomes, principally peer-reviewed scientific publications, through program definition, performance management, directed academic collaboration, and scientific mentoring in an organizational structure based on entrepreneurial principal investigators. This position has full responsibility and accountability for quality and quantity of work product and personnel activities.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Manages a multi-disciplinary staff of researchers, including recruitment, objective setting and development, performance evaluation, and performance management. Achieves research outcomes, principally scientific peer-reviewed publications, through program definition, performance management, and scientific mentoring in an organizational structure based on entrepreneurial Principal Investigators.
2. Provides technical support and mentoring to Center researchers
3. Develops and maintains a current research plan with priority targets consistent with Center objectives and performance metrics. Pursues opportunities for cross-center interaction and research collaboration. Ensures effective allocation of resources for database and field studies of the causes and trends in occupational injuries, and identifies strategic resource needs and opportunities.
4. Develops and maintains industry and academic relationships to ensure research collaborations are consistent with the scope, mission and priorities of the Institute and the CIE.
5. Ensures the CIE meets publication objectives, focusing on high-quality, innovative, and high impact peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
6. Conducts research as a Principal Investigator, and supports research collaborations which are consistent with the scope, mission, and priorities of the Institute, achieving specific targets for scientific publication.
Candidate Qualifications: A Ph.D., or equivalent, and a minimum of 10 years of professional/academic experience, as well as scientific management experience are required. Backgrounds in safety research, occupational and/or injury epidemiology, biostatistics, and related sciences preferred. The successful applicant will possess a strong record of relevant, first authored publications in premier, peer-reviewed scientific journals and high-quality scientific presentations. He/she will also possess excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal and leadership skills. The successful applicant will also have substantial experience in managing a multi-disciplinary research team, involved in multiple and concurrent projects, and demonstrated competencies in mentoring scientific personnel.
Applicants should be effective problem solvers who work well with individual differences and diverse technical expertise. He/she should be a collaborative team player, bringing an open-minded and creative approach to driving consensus in an organization. The successful applicant must possess a high degree of personal and professional integrity and ethical standards, and an unquestioned commitment to success and achievement.
