Position Description:
The U. S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) seeks an experienced PhD-level nutrition epidemiologist to perform complex epidemiological research.
The Military Performance and Military Nutrition Divisions conduct epidemiologic research to better understand the roles of diet, exercise, and health habits; resistance to disease and injury; body weight management; and obesity among military service members. Specific issues to be addressed include the appropriateness of screening height for weight tables; the influence of overweight on adverse health outcomes and attrition among service members; maladaptive strategies for weight management; prevalence and risk factors for eating disorders; the use and abuse of nutritional supplements; determination of the natural history of weight gain during military service; and exploration of risk factors for and prevalence of health conditions associated with obesity, especially hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis related to weight bearing, and cardiovascular disease. Our multidisciplinary approach primarily focuses on conducting research using existing data contained in a comprehensive data base known as the Total Army Injury and Health Outcomes Data base (TAIHOD) (https://www.denix.osd.mil/denix/Public/Library/Atlas/chapter8.pdf) and supplemented by data collected from service-wide surveys and cohort studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conceptualize and develop complex research protocols for nutritional epidemiology utilizing the TAIHOD database
- Determine appropriate criteria for defining the analytic cohort
- Implement appropriate statistical analyses
- Write and submit manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals
Qualifications:
- PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Nutrition, or related field
- Programming experience preferred
- Experience with application of statistical analyses preferred
