Position Description: The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine is recruiting for a full-time academic position at the Associate/ Full Professor Level (50% FTE-tenured/ 50% In Residence) in the Department of Public Health Sciences.

Responsibilities include increasing the molecular/genetic and chronic disease epidemiology, prevention and control program in the Department, mentoring graduate students, and increasing interactions and collaborations with geneticists, epidemiologists, clinicians and other investigators in other departments in the School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, other departments on campus and the state health department. In addition, he/she will be expected to develop an independent research program relevant to molecular/genetic epidemiology and collaborate with other investigators on grants related to genetic and chronic disease epidemiology, prevention, and control.

Teaching opportunities may include: (1) teaching a course and/or seminar in molecular/genetic epidemiology, (2) assisting in training and mentoring graduate students in epidemiology, and (3) providing continuing education to School of Medicine faculty regarding molecular/genetic and chronic disease epidemiology, prevention and control.

This position may, at times, require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position may include but are not limited to ergonomic stressors involved in computer work.



Qualifications: Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in epidemiology, public health, medicine or a related field. Research experience in molecular/genetic epidemiology is required. We particularly welcome applicants with interests in the molecular/genetic aspects of cancer or chronic disease.
Demonstrated experience or potential for assuming administrative and leadership roles in a School of Medicine or School of Public Health setting are highly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with strong communication abilities. Candidates must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.

Experience working on community-based intervention programs and/or observational studies is highly desirable. The applicant should have the ability to form an interdisciplinary network of collaborators with expertise relevant to molecular/genetic epidemiology. He/she should have the ability to work collaboratively with public health agencies, clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, and community groups concerned with epidemiology, prevention and control of chronic diseases. A broad knowledge of molecular/genetic epidemiology and sound epidemiologic methods, and an established track record of funding support and publication are necessary. Experience in project administration and fiscal management is desirable.



Organization Description: The Department of Public Health Sciences (http://phs.ucdavis.edu/) is a major research and teaching department in the School of Medicine, with 25 full-time faculty members. In addition to epidemiologic research within the Department, there is active collaboration with many faculty in other departments and centers of the School of Medicine such as the Clinical and Translational Research Center, the Cancer Center, the M.I.N.D.Institute, the Center for Environmental Health Science, and the Alzheimer’s Disease Center. Collaborations also exist with other faculty on the UC Davis campus, including in the School of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, the Center for Health and the Environment, and elsewhere. Areas of active research in the Department include occupational/ environmental health, cancer, reproductive and women’s health, aging, nutrition, cardiopulmonary disease and injuries/ accidents. Department faculty are principal investigators and collaborators on many large cohort studies in addition to work on a wide range of other epidemiologic studies and clinical trials. We offer a Master’s in Public Health program on the UC Davis campus. Department faculty also participate in doctoral education through the Graduate Groups in Statistics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
