Position Description: CBAR is seeking a PhD epidemiologist with proven quantitative skills to collaborate with U.S. and international investigators in basic and clinical research undertaken by the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). The ACTG is the largest group conducting Phase I to IV clinical trials and observational studies of treatments for Adult HIV infection and its complications and co-infections. The successful applicant will be expected to take a leadership role in a wide range of epidemiological activities, notably a major, ongoing, long-term, observational study that currently includes over 4,000 subjects followed for up to 9 years. Other responsibilities include the design and analysis of case-control and cohort studies and related methodological research. She or he will work with our established and productive epidemiology group and with a large group of biostatisticians and programmers in CBAR.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a doctorate in Epidemiology and proven methodological and quantitative skills. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential. Experience with software including SAS and with HIV research are desirable. The position may be at the Research Associate level for a new graduate or in the Research Scientist track for someone with an established research record.

Organization Description: The Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) is a Center at the Harvard School of Public Health whose mission is to foster and conduct statistical scientific activity in clinical trials and other public health research areas in HIV disease, to promote innovative strategies for medical interventions and study design, and to provide education and training relevant to statistical aspects of HIV disease research.
The largest project of CBAR is the Statistical and Data Analysis Center (SDAC) of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). The ACTG is a clinical cooperative group dedicated to AIDS research and is funded by the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Other CBAR projects include the Immune Response Corporation (IRC) clinical trials and the Neurologic AIDS Research Consortium (NARC), which funds neurological investigations for some ACTG investigators. Further information is available on the relationships among CBAR, SDAC, HSPH, FSTRF, and DFCI.

Since its creation in the Fall of 1995, the Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) has been very active in research on new treatments for persons infected with HIV. With a staff of over 60 biostatisticians, we have been responsible for the design, monitoring, and analysis of most of the federally-funded clinical trials of HIV in the U.S. Because of the rapidly-changing standard of care of HIV due to improved virologic markers and new therapies, we also have played a key role in developing research strategy. In addition to our research on evaluation of therapies for HIV, a primary aim of CBAR has been to collaborate with governments and investigators from developing countries to assist in the design and analysis of vaccine and therapy trials of HIV, and to help to develop expertise and infrastructure in these countries so that they are in a better position to devise and implement programs for controlling the AIDS epidemic in their countries. These aims are reflected in our past accomplishments and goals for the coming year.
