Description
The Director, Epidemiology will work independently and guide more junior staff in the design, execution, analysis, interpration, and internal and external communication of specific epidemiologic studies. This role requires taking a leadership role a range of activities, e.g.
Deliver highly experienced strategic input, epidemiological support and leadership to Research Areas (RAs), Therapy Areas (TAs), project teams and the Epidemiology Group, at all stages of pharmaceutical development, to maximize the market potential of AstraZeneca products, manage risks, and optimize epidemiological processes and methods
Specialized research to enhance the effectiveness of Epidemiology contributions to world wide submissions and the drug research process including discovery, development and commercialization across a broad range of products
Effectively negotiate with and strategically influence senior leadership (e.g. Department or Therapy area leaders) as well as a wide range of project teams
Provide innovative thinking regarding the design of clinical and epidemiological programmes and commercialisation
Set standards for utilization of epidemiology, provide methodological leadership and input to Epidemiological Strategies
Identify and validate external data sources
Develop relationships with international opinion leaders and collaborative groups to enhance the standing of AZ Epidemilogy and epidemiologists in the external scientific/academic community
Provide strategic guidance to the global epidemiology skills group and to the company in a specific epidemiological area of expertise, and typically, in a specific therapy area.


Requirements
Ph.D. in epidemiology or a related field and at least 5 years experience as an epidemiologist in a health care environment. Alternatively, a Masters degree or equivalent and at least 10 years experience as an epidemiologist in a health care environment.
At least six years experience in the pharmaceutical industry or in closely related academic epidemiological research
Sustained productivity in epidemiological research as manifest by successful design, execution, and publication of epidemiological research relevant to drug discovery and development (e.g., drug safety).
Emerging recognition by the external scientific communities as an expert in the application of epidemiology to areas relevant to drug development and commercialization
Sustained record of epidemiological productivity at a strategic as well as an operational level
Able to effectively engage and consult with recognized key external scientific experts
Widely recognized as expert in a particular therapy area and/or epidemiological application

Skills and Capabilities
Thorough knowledge of epidemiological methodology and its applications to pharmaceutical industry at an international level
Broad therapeutic and disease area knowledge and a comprehensive knowledge of drug development and life cycle management
Excellent understanding of the overall business strategy and its link to the various disease areas
High level of influencing ability and be able to negotiate and strategically influence other functions in discovery, development and commercial environment
Methodological leadership and ability to defend his or her opinions and beliefs
