Public Health Epidemiologist II

The NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene’s (DOHMH) Bureau of Immunization has a need for a Public Health Epidemiologist II. The mission of the Bureau of Immunization is to protect the health of all New Yorkers through the prevention and control of Vaccine Preventable Diseases. The Surveillance Unit of the Bureau is directly responsible for monitoring, reporting and investigating all reported suspect cases of VPDs. The Unit is responsible for assuring the institution of control measures, as well as outbreak response including identifying contacts, vaccination and antibiotic prophylaxis. The recent introduction of new vaccines for children and adults has created the need for the design and implementation of new and creative surveillance systems to monitor the impact of these new vaccines, which may include rotavirus and human papillomavirus infections.

The Public Health Epidemiologist II will work under the supervision of the Unit Chief of the Surveillance Unit in the Bureau of Immunization. The Public Health Epidemiologist II will perform the following duties: Management of the disease data bases; responsible for routine analysis of surveillance data and the production of routine reports; conducting other analytic projects, including research; coordinating investigations between field staff and central office; serving as point of contact for receipt of reports of VPDs to the central office; assisting with outbreak investigations, including database development, data analysis and required field work including specimen collection; monitoring the quality of surveillance data and overseeing reporting VPD surveillance data to local, state, and national authorities.

The qualified candidate must possess:
1. A Master's degree in public health or epidemiology from an accredited college or
university; or

2. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by eight credits in the physical or biological sciences; or a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and successful completion of PRINCIPLES OF EPIDEMIOLOGY (#3030-G), a course for health professionals, given by the Centers for Disease Control, U.S. Public Health Service; plus one year of full-time paid experience as a health professional in a position which requires the reading and interpretation of hospital medical charts and complex medical information, in order to ascertain the medical condition of patients.

At least one year experience in epidemiological methods, public health practice, outbreak investigation and disease control methods is preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills are desirable. Excellent computer skills including MS Access, MS Excel, GIS applications and statistical analysis software e.g. SAS, SPSS, and, Stata are a plus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including bilingual ability are preferred as well.
