Position Description: Antimicrobial use is a principal factor in the emergence of drug resistant infections. Surveillance for bacterial respiratory and drug resistant infections has been an ongoing focus of CDC and other public health authorities; this position will focus on monitoring disease trends and antimicrobial use patterns using a variety of databases, correlating antimicrobial use with antimicrobial resistance among key community pathogens, and disseminating the results of these analyses on a regular basis through peer-review literature and other means. The selected candidate will provide analytic support as part of an analytic team composed of epidemiologists, physicians, statisticians, and data managers/programmers and will be located organizationally within a core group of statisticians and data managers in CDC’s Division of Bacterial Diseases. Data bases will include the Active Bacterial Core Surveillance (ABCs) system, National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (both from the National Center for Health Statistics [NCHS]), Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality), and Medicare data. The team will focus on tracking trends in bacterial respiratory infections, use of specific antimicrobial agents by specific population groups, analyses of the relation between various interventions (e.g., promotion of appropriate antibiotic use; introduction of new vaccines for respiratory conditions) and antimicrobial use, and the relation between antimicrobial use and drug resistant infections. This topic is a high priority area for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at CDC and the team will be responsible for developing information for updates to key constituents on a regular basis. The selected candidate will conduct data analyses and prepare summary reports under the supervision of a statistician and based on consultation with epidemiologists and others on evaluations of bacterial respiratory diseases, antimicrobial use, and the relation between use and resistance.
