Description
The Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention seeks a faculty member at the level of Instructor or Assistant Professor to expand its pharmacoepidemiology program. The department is jointly sponsored by Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and focuses on research and teaching related to improving population health and health care delivery. The department’s work in pharmacoepidemiology includes a) development of database and networking capabilities, b) methods development, particularly with regard to active surveillance for adverse reactions to drugs and vaccines; c) epidemiologic studies of therapeutics’ safety, effectiveness, and comparative effectiveness; d) descriptive studies of the use and appropriateness of use of therapeutics; e) population/practice level interventions to improve the use of therapeutics. This work is funded by AHRQ, CDC, FDA, and other sources. A major focus of the group’s work is in using automated administrative and electronic medical record data from health plans and large group practices. There is a special emphasis on developing and using multi-center data resources to support this research. The department’s faculty often work in the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care environment, with other Massachusetts and national health plans, and the HMO Research Network, a group of 14 HMOs committed to public domain research in the United States. The faculty also has strong collaborative relationships with Boston’s largest fully computerized multi-specialty group practice, with which it collaborates on research, teaching, and clinical practice. The department seeks an Instructor or Assistant Professor who can develop an independent program of research, and also participate in ongoing research endeavors. Demonstrated expertise in designing and leading large database studies and good leadership and collaboration skills are essential. The Department is multi-disciplinary, with a research and teaching portfolio spanning a range of clinical, educational, and health service areas. The faculty member will be expected to spend the major part of her/his time conducting collaborative research. The successful candidate is expected to use the department’s unique resources and access to defined populations.

Besides her/his principal research activities, the faculty member will also be expected to spend a portion of time participating in the broader mission of the department as follows: • Teach and mentor medical students, graduate students, and/or research fellows. • Establish and maintain collegial and productive contacts with other researchers and educators in the university and managed care communities • Contribute to departmental and medical school administration as a member of committees • Maintain a small clinical practice, if appropriate Joint appointment in a second Harvard Medical School department or in the Harvard School of Public Health may be appropriate.

Requirements
The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications: • Doctorate in epidemiology or health services research, or MD plus MPH or comparable advanced degree • Experience and achievement in pharmacoepidemiology • A productive record of peer-reviewed publications • Expertise in research using large administrative and clinical databases • Demonstrated capacity for obtaining research funding, program development and leadership in research and teaching • Demonstrated ability to lead and work in multi-disciplinary work groups • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
