Job Purpose The Epidemiologist II has the lead responsibility for managing the epidemiologic, analysis, and data systems projects of the Institute for Community Health (ICH). Has a leadership role in design, collection, and analysis of data. The Epidemiologist II supervises data staff including epidemiologists, data analysts, database developers, data processing staff, interns, and others as assigned. The position supports the ICH staff on grant proposals development, and presents data to community and academic audiences. The Epidemiologist II prepares and writes papers for peer-reviewed publications, reports, and presentations. The position has primary responsibility for managing the analysis component of research projects. Works independently to assess public health research issues and answer research questions. Performs appropriate epidemiologic and statistical analysis for research and evaluation projects. Responds to data requests and manages data request task flow. Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Manager, Data Services.
Job - Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Management
-- Manages epidemiologic and data analysis staff. Provides project oversight,
supervision, and technical assistance to the staff.
-- Represents the research, epidemiologic and analysis needs of the department at
internal, local, state, and national forums
-- Responsible for maintenance and security of data collected
-- Assists with hiring of epidemiologic, data analysis, database, and data processing
staff
-- Designs and configures data collection, data management, and data analysis
systems
Research and Dissemination
-- Provides leadership for ICH staff on research methodology for projects and grant proposals
-- Manages data collection, processing, and analysis component of research projects
-- Assists with preparation of papers for publication, including writing literature
reviews and analysis sections
-- Works with team on grant proposals, may take lead on proposals
Data quality and validity
-- Work with ICH staff on the design of studies, questionnaires, and record keeping to ensure that analysis and data collected will be valid and appropriate
-- Obtains datasets about health issues and socio-demographic data
Analysis
-- Performs statistical analysis on data using the appropriate methodology and the
SAS for windows application
-- Design SAS programs to analyze research data
-- Oversees SAS programming of the epidemiology and data analysis staff
Dissemination
-- Reports and interprets data for the ICH staff and other community and academic
partners
-- Presents data to various community groups, organizations, and boards in a clear
and easy to understand manner
-- Proposes, writes, and presents abstracts to national public health organizations
-- Assists with developing and writing papers for peer-reviewed journals
Project Design and Grants Proposals
-- Works with teams to try to obtain grant funding for specific projects
-- Provides technical assistance to ICH staff on the design and analysis of research
and evaluation projects

Education/Training: Masters in Public Health with concentration in epidemiology or Biostatistics or MS in Epidemiology or Biostatistics required.
Work Experience: Five years experience in a public health setting. Experience with large data sets required. Two years of SAS programming experience required. Knowledge of MS Word Excel, and PowerPoint required. Advanced knowledge of biostatistics and statistical computing required. Advanced knowledge of the concepts of epidemiology required. Experience with web searches required. Experience with Access. Strong interpersonal skills required. Strong writing skills (writing sample required). Experience working with diverse populations preferred.
Physical Skills: Must be able to travel around the city and state, work at a computer for prolonged periods.
Mental Skills: Must be able to use MS Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Intermediate SAS programming skills required. Ability to collect and process data and perform advanced epidemiologic and quantitative analyses. Excellent oral and written skills. Flexibility and ability to work under stress and adverse conditions, and to manage and prioritize a large number of competing demands.
Working Conditions and Physical Environment: Working environment is office based and community based and entails travel both in the city and statewide. Occasional travel out of state may be indicated.
