Bellevue, Washington: Epidemiologist – Disease Modeling, Intellectual Ventures
TITLE: Epidemiologist – Disease Modeling
LOCATION: Bellevue, WA
Intellectual Ventures (“IV”) is a privately-held, invention investment company based in Bellevue, Washington. Founded in 2000, IV’s business model centers on creating, acquiring and licensing pure invention in a variety of technology areas. IV plans to commercialize inventions through licensing, spin-offs, joint ventures and industry partnerships.
The Epidemiologist position works as part of a disease modeling team and collaborates in development of a sophisticated model of infectious disease, then using this model to create a tool for both research and eradication campaign planning.
Key Responsibilities:
• Collects, analyzes, and manipulates input data to support the modeling effort.
• Reviews literature on infectious diseases of many different kinds and determines which aspects of biology, demography, geography, and climate are relevant to the model.
• Works closely with the model programmers to refine the tool and use it to conduct sensitivity analyses, explore tradeoffs among possible interventions, and optimize eradication plans for time, cost, or other factors.
• Writes software code (in C/C++) to implement model features.
• Collects, analyzes, and presents data on model results and performance.
• Assists in the production of research articles and conference presentations communicating the project and its results to the scientific community.
Key Qualifications and Required Skills:
• Recent scientific research in modeling infectious diseases.
• Methods for validating epidemiological models and characterizing model performance.
• Practical use of epidemiological models as tactical tools in public health.
• In depth knowledge of at least one specific disease system, with preference given to knowledge of multiple diseases.
• Issues of public health in developing world settings, with preference given to first-hand experience.
• Principles, techniques, and tools of computational epidemiology.
• Numerical analysis, dynamical systems, and stochastic processes.
• Programming in C/C++; interviewer can request to see code of a completed project or test programming abilities during the interview.
• Biomedical statistics.
• Read, write, and optimize C and C++ modules that fit within a larger architectural framework.
• Assess tradeoffs between scientific accuracy, computational performance, and practical utility to eradication planning.
• Understand published work of other disease modeling efforts, evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the methodology and devise improved methods of simulation, computation, and presentation.
• Read and write research articles in biology and applied mathematics.
• Create and deliver effective PowerPoint presentations on technical subjects.
• Work extended hours to meet a deadline.
• A demonstrated ability to work productively as part of a small team.
• At least 2 years experience in C/C++ software development.
