TITLE: Project Scientist – Disease Modeling
LOCATION: Bellevue, WA
Intellectual Ventures (“IV”) is a privately-held, invention investment company based in Bellevue, Washington. Founded in 2000, IV’s business model centers on creating, acquiring and licensing pure invention in a variety of technology areas. IV plans to commercialize inventions through licensing, spin-offs, joint ventures and industry partnerships.
The Project Scientist position works as part of an epidemiological modeling team, collaborating in development of a sophisticated model of infectious disease then using this model to create tools for both research and eradication campaign planning.
Responsibilities:
• Facilitates most non-development tasks required to construct a disease modeling and eradication planning tool.
• Produces technical and user documentation.
• Produces requirements for the user interface and output visualization, conducts usability testing and quality assurance testing.
• Researches, acquires, analyzes, and manipulates input data on salient factors including transportation networks and traffic, health system characteristics, morbidity and mortality trends, vector distributions and population trends, etc.
• Manages communication and liaison with external collaborators, other modeling groups, government agencies and NGOs, publications, etc.
• Primary liaison with other disease-related projects within Intellectual Ventures.
• Assists team scientists and IV editors in the production of journal articles and conference papers describing the project and its results.
Key Qualifications and Required Skills:
• Best practices, tools, and techniques in software documentation.
• French language: conversational French required, fluency desired.
• Other languages desirable, with preference given to Swahili, Malagasy, and Hindi.
• Demonstrated ability to find obscure technical data sets and evaluate their value for a particular use.
• Read and write C and C++ software of moderate complexity; interviewer can request to see code of a completed project or test programming abilities during the interview.
• Make sustained rapid progress on multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Work extended hours to meet a deadline.
• Recruit and supervise contract researchers or analysts.
• Read and write research articles in biology and applied mathematics with at least one published article in peer-reviewed scientific journals. List of articles to be submitted with application, preference given to better body of work measured in quality and quantity.
• Create and deliver effective PowerPoint presentations on technical subjects.
• Strong interpersonal skills when communicating with scientists and government authorities.
• Proficient with PowerPoint, Excel.
• Prior experience with GIS software and/or visualization of computational science is preferred.
• Prior experience documenting a software project of significant size.
• Prior experience designing and performing usability tests and participating in user interface design efforts.
• Degree or equivalent work experience in epidemiology, applied mathematics, computational biology, public health, computer science, operations research, statistics, or biology, with preference in that order and for multiple fields, with preference given to PhD (first) and MS (second).
