New York: syndromic surveillance analyst, New York City Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene

The NYC DOHMH operates several near real-time syndromic surveillance systems for early detection of disease outbreaks in NYC and the metropolitan area. New sources of electronic data and advances in information technology enable daily monitoring of emergency department and outpatient visits, pharmacy sales, school nurse visits and other health indicators. Rapid development of analytical and surveillance methods in this innovative area of public health create exciting opportunities for research in an applied public health setting.

As the lead Data Analyst, your duties will include but not be limited to:

• Enhance syndromic surveillance systems by developing, implementing, and evaluating different statistical models and tools for time trend analysis, and detection of cluster and disease aberrations to improve public health practice and response activities.
• Modify, design, write, adapt, and debug SAS programs for automated processing, quality control, backup, warehousing and analysis of data. Maintain databases and files.
• Develop analysis plans to integrate syndromic and notifiable disease surveillance data to enhance opportunities for early event detection.
• Provide data collection and analysis support for disease outbreak investigations.
• Prepare and present abstract, summary reports and research papers and presentations describing surveillance methodologies and evaluations.

The qualified candidate will possess:
• A Doctorate or Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology or in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and 1-3 years of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization.
• Expertise in the use of SAS strongly preferred.
• Experience in the design, management and analysis of public health databases or syndromic surveillance systems strongly preferred.

NOTE: NEW YORK CITY RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED WITHIN 90 DAYS OF APPOINTMENT.
