New York City: Executive Director, ART START for the homeless, The Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group

Position: Executive Director
ART START
The Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group

Art Start:

Each night in New York City, more than 38,000 people are homeless. Almost half of them are children under the age of 18, comprising by far the largest and fastest-growing segment of the homeless population. Intervention is desperately needed to help children from falling victim to
a number of problems endemic to homeless people, such as drug addiction, domestic violence and discrimination. Yet, even when services are provided, they are often interrupted when children move from one shelter to another. Despite this urgent and growing need, the number of programs supporting homeless youth continues to decrease. Plagued by small staff sizes and
further threatened by budget cuts, shelters are ill-equipped to offer necessary recreational activities without the intervention of outside groups, leaving youth with no alternative to the street after the school day ends. Since 1991, Art Start has been part of the solution.

Founded by a handful of artists who got together to make art with homeless kids in New York City, Art Start connects with kids who are denied access to a nurturing education, a supportive home environment and promising work opportunities. Art Start's kids are shut out. They contend with economic brutality, racism and neglect every day, and get pinned with harsh labels like "homeless," "dropout," "thug" and worse. They would rather shape their own identities. They are strong, resilient, open-minded, talented and full of dreams. They yearn to be participants, to make meaningful contributions. Art Start uses the arts to spark their lives to the possibilities of "making it." Art Start gives them tools and opportunities, and most important, a chance to be heard.

Challenges Facing the Executive Director:

The next Executive Director will come to Art Start as the board looks to carefully, deliberately and thoughtfully nurture and grow a modest model program into one which substantially increases the impact the program is having on the children in its community. Whether the program will grow to more shelters or work more deeply with existing program youth is uncertain; what is clear, however, is that the program will retain and even improve the high level of quality it currently offers. Art Start is seeking a leader who will both position the organization for profound and meaningful work and simultaneously share ideas and best practices with other programs also looking to make incredible contributions to homeless children. The ideal candidate will couple strong business acumen with the heart and soul
of a social worker and a steadfast commitment to the belief that involvement in the arts can permanently alter the trajectory of a homeless child's life.

This search is being led by Laura Gassner Otting and Deb Berman. Any assistance you can provide in identifying or nominating applicants would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Laura Gassner Otting, President, and Deb Berman, Vice President

Job Description
Description: Institute of Animal Health

Institute of Animal Health

Mathematical Epidemiologist
Pirbright
£24,200 to £27,200 + Benefits
Ref: 07P/00010

With 380 staff, up to 100 students and visiting scientists and an annual budget of £30 million, the Institute for Animal Health is the largest charity undertaking research into infectious diseases of animals in the UK.

Our Mathematical Biology group conducts research into the epidemiology of farm animal diseases using a combination of fieldwork, statistical analysis and mathematical modelling. A key area of activity is the epidemiology of scrapie, a fatal neurological sheep disease that is closely related to BSE in cattle and variant CJD in humans, and which is endemic in the UK.

You will contribute significantly to a Defra-funded project to assess the design and efficiency of control strategies for scrapie. You will develop and analyse mathematical models for the spread and control of this disease and estimate parameters for use in the models. At the same time, you will prepare material for the dissemination of results to scientists, policy makers and the farming industry. You will also attend high profile meetings, conferences and workshops, whilst collaborating closely with some eminent scientists.

To take on this challenge, you will require a PhD involving extensive mathematical modelling. Ideally this would be backed by proven experience of research in epidemiology, TSEs or a track record of working with field scientists. Above all, you will bring outstanding attention to detail and an innovative and imaginative approach to everything you do.

Pennsylvania: Health Quality Community Organizer, Consumer Health Coalition

Health Quality Community Organizer Job Posting

Consumer Health Coalition (CHC) is seeking an individual for the position of Community Organizer. Founded in 1998, CHC is a nonprofit organization that works to inspire a consumer movement to enhance access to quality, affordable health care. We target people that are at risk for experiencing barriers to health care in Southwestern Pennsylvania, including people with low incomes, individuals from minority backgrounds, and people with disabilities.

Consumer Health Coalition is dedicated to building a consumer movement to enhance health care quality. About 98,000 people die each year from medical errors, more than the number of people who die from AIDS, car accidents or breast cancer alone (Institute of Medicine). And only 55% of adults receive all the care that is recommended for their particular needs (RAND). We believe an organized and active consumer voice is essential to ensure that care is safe, clinically recommended, equitable and patient-centered.

CHC's Board also voted to broadly support Governor Rendell's "Prescription for Pennsylvania." Many of our values surrounding health care reform are captured in the Governor's plan, including the portions related to improving health care quality and reducing medical errors.
We believe "Prescription for Pennsylvania" offers a fantastic opportunity to reduce hospital-acquired infections, enhance transparency, and improve care for people with chronic conditions.

The Community Organizer will be responsible for building consumer movements to enhance health care quality and to broadly support "Prescription for Pennsylvania." He/she will accomplish this by recruiting and organizing a broad consumer base, empowering consumers to
engage in the civic process, helping them to become effective advocates for their health and health care needs, and building coalitions and developing strong community partnerships.

Experience in organizing nonprofit advocacy campaigns
Experience and comfort working with at-risk populations, specifically people with low-incomes, individuals from minority backgrounds, and people with disabilities
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to communicate with consumers, staff at health/human services organizations, and elected/appointed officials
Outstanding organizational skills, including ability to prioritize and manage various complex projects simultaneously
Commitment to social justice in general, and quality, affordable health care specifically
Strong leadership, collaborative, and team building skills
Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently
Strong work ethic and ability to think strategically
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exhibit patience and compassion

RESPONSIBILITIES

Research community organizing best practices
Enhance public awareness about the need to improve quality through media and workshops
Train consumers in the areas of leadership, civic engagement, and advocacy skills
Represent CHC at external meetings at both the local and state level
