JOB SUMMARY: Epidemiologist II positions perform professional work involved in the detection of diseases or injuries afflicting human populations, disease patterns or injury prevalence, and their causes and control; and perform related work as required.

Under general supervision, incumbents in this class are responsible for planning, directing and coordinating activities of disease or injury surveillance, control and reporting for one major program area such as food borne disease or trauma, a piece of a very large program such as AIDS, Bioterrorism or Maternal, Family and Child Health, or several smaller programs such as lead reporting and hospital discharge surveillance.

REQUIREMENTS: Examples of qualifying education/experience are:

1. Two years of experience as an Epidemiologist I in the County of San Diego; OR,

2. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health with specialization in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field, AND two (2) years of professional epidemiology experience.

Note: A Ph.D. in epidemiology, public health, life science or a closely related field from an accredited college of university is highly desirable.

ALSO REQUIRED: A valid California class C driver’s license, which must be maintained throughout employment in this class, is required at time of appointment, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel. Employees in this class may be required to use their own vehicle.

Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation.

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

Citizenship Requirements and Immigration Status. Pursuant to the Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act, the County hires only U.S. citizens and lawfully authorized alien workers. Individuals employed in executive-level positions or in positions subject to Peace Officer Standards and Training must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

Drug and Alcohol Policy. The use of illicit drugs and alcohol is not permitted in the workplace. This County policy is vigorously enforced. Employees who violate this policy are subject to disciplinary procedures which include termination.

Educational Requirements. For U.S. college or university degrees to be considered, the institution or program must be accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For degrees received outside of the U.S. to be considered, applicants must submit an educational evaluation report from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.

Pre-Employment Requirements. Appointment to County service is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment medical examinations which include drug and alcohol screening. The following time limits shall apply: a) Objections to the administration or a part of an examination shall be petitioned to the Director at the time of administration or no later than 5 work days of the occurrence of the examination part; b) Objections to the results of an examination shall be petitioned to the Director no later than 10 calendar days from the date results are postmarked.

Written multiple choice answer sheet scoring may be checked within 10 calendar days from the postmark on the test results notice.

Veterans Preference Points. The National Veterinary Institute now invites applications from exceptional candidates for a position as Senior Scientist in the Department of Virology at Lindholm. The position is on a permanent basis and the Department will support exceptional candidates with start-up funds and technical assistance for the first 1-3 years after which most activities are expected to be funded from external grants.

The likely candidate holds a biological relevant degree (in particular we encourage Veterinarians to apply) together with a PhD including solid experimental experience in e.g. virology or molecular biology, detailed quantitative studies, field and molecular epidemiology and likely working experience in virology, diagnostics, pathology or epidemiology.

A positive attitude and good interpersonal skills are essential. An evaluation of the applicants' scientific qualifications will be carried out in accordance with current regulations.

The scientist will participate in research on foot-and-mouth disease and possible other virus vesicular diseases of livestock in close collaboration with the Head of Section for Vesicular Virus Diseases, Research Professor Søren Alexandersen, as well as a number of Senior and Junior Scientists in the Section. The Section is currently moving to a newly build, state-of-the-art facility with maximum containment for safe experimental work on highly infectious animal viruses, in particular foot-and-mouth disease virus. The new unit also includes dedicated small and large animal facilities as well as complete laboratory facilities, post mortem room and technical installations to assure safe operation.

The successful Senior Scientist will be expected to help jump start the research facilities in the facility in particular in close collaboration with the Research Professor and to develop a top-level international research area within foot-and-mouth disease while still keeping the work useful for the national and international authorities funding most of the work. The selected candidate will have a considerable degree of freedom to select the specific area of interest, however, it must be stressed that the activities in the new facility should all be well coordinated and give an optimal scientific and applied outcome.

The Senior Scientist is expected to produce international publications describing results obtained. In addition, the Senior Scientist are also expected to participate with maybe 25% of his/her time in the other ongoing activities of the laboratory aimed at advancing the scientific understanding of the pathogenesis, excretion, persistence and transmission of foot-and-mouth disease in close reference to Research Professor Søren Alexandersen.

Terms of employment are according to the relevant collective agreement for academics.

The place of work is Lindholm Island between Moen and Zealand.

Due to work with virus diseases not occurring in Denmark (OIE (former) list A diseases) the employee is not allowed to hold or get in contact with cloven-hoofed animals or have commercial poultry farming. The Department of International Health of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health seeks candidates for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of humanitarian assistance. The position will be in the Health Systems Program of the Department of International Health.

Eligible candidates should have a PhD or MD with experience in field-based research in the context of natural disasters, conflict, and complex emergencies in multiple international settings. Experience in program evaluation and quantitative statistics; experience working with a variety of service-oriented humanitarian organizations; and demonstrated ability to design, implement and document successful field projects are required.

The Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health seeks candidates for a tenure track Assistant Professor in the Cancer Health Disparities Research Program. The mission of the program is to advance the knowledge base toward eliminating disparities in the prevention and treatment of cancer. The Department of International Health of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in the Social and Behavioral and Interventions (SBI) program. The position is available immediately.

Qualifications include an earned doctoral degree in a social science discipline (psychology, sociology, anthropology) or public health (with specialization in social science or a related field), and a minimum of three years experience in research or practice in lower and middle income countries. Experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of behavior change interventions at the local or national levels is desirable. A record of scholarly publication, research funding, teaching and field experience is required.

Responsibilities include establishing an independent research agenda through extramural funding, teaching, advising in the graduate program, and service to the community and the field of public health. Research areas of interest include health behaviors and interventions associated with significant burdens of disease and disability in developing countries in such areas as malaria, HIV/AIDS, newly emerging infections, chronic disease and accidents.

The Department of International Health leads the field in research, teaching and service on health issues relevant to lower and middle income countries and underserved populations. The SBI program is dedicated to qualitative and quantitative social science research and training related to health interventions. It has 11 affiliated full-time faculty with substantial research projects in multiple settings, including Tanzania, India, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Mali, Peru, Nigeria and Native American and First Nations communities. The broad range of faculty research includes work on HIV/AIDS, malaria, human nutrition and maternal and child health. We offer academic training at the masters and doctoral levels and attract top students in the field.

The Division of Health Services Management and Policy at The Ohio State University College of Public Health seeks candidates for the newly endowed Loebs Professorship in Health Services Management and Policy.

Job Description:

The Ohio State University College of Public Health’s Division of Environmental Health Sciences, in partnership with the OSU College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ Department of Food Science and Technology, is searching for an Assistant (or Associate) Professor in environmental microbiology. This tenure-track faculty position is a joint appointment between the Division of Environmental Health Sciences (70%) and the Department of Food Science and Technology (30%). The position will be available starting the autumn of 2008. This is one of several faculty positions made possible by a Targeted Investment in Excellence (TIE) in Public Health Preparedness for Infectious Diseases (PHPID). This special award from the OSU Office of Academic Affairs represents an exciting collaboration in a fast-growing, collegial environment. To qualify, the candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in environmental microbiology, environmental health sciences, or related fields.

Responsibilities:

Develop a well-funded research program in environmental microbiology leading to publications in peer-reviewed high-impact journals.
Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental microbiology and advise graduate students.
Collaborate with faculty within the TIE program and with OSU scholars working in public health, food safety, infectious diseases, preparedness, and water microbiology.
Contribute to relevant professional societies aiming to enhance the national and international reputation of home departments and Colleges.

Provide statewide leadership for MU Extension’s health education program with a focus on chronic disease prevention and management. The primary project involves a pilot study of a behavioral intervention to prevent sexual HIV transmission among methamphetamine using men who have sex with men (MSM). The project will include a series of focus groups with members of the target population and the health service agencies that serve them, developing and testing intervention sessions with the target population, and pilot testing the intervention. The Project Coordinator will assist in convening and facilitating the focus groups, developing intervention manuals and study protocols, conducting baseline and follow-up assessment interviews with participants, and conducting intervention counseling sessions. S/he will collect and enter data, perform quality control checks, and perform initial statistical analyses for projects that will involve coordinating and over-seeing efforts of a study counselor and supervising data management efforts. The Project Coordinator will develop and maintain a system for tracking and retaining study participants. Responsibilities will include: writing and submitting IRB applications, writing study protocol manuals, participant recruitment, data collection, data entry & management, support of data analysis and manuscript preparation, and preparation of progress reports required by the funding agency. The incumbent will correspond regularly with study staff, study investigators, and with participants through mailings, phone, and face-to-face discussion about study procedures. S/he will seek out and maintain collaborative relationships with community-based organizations, service agencies, and other stakeholders to provide referral sources for study participants and maintain community support for the studies. S/he will train and supervise student interns, administrative aides, and research counselors as needed. The Project Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day operations of the studies, which includes budget management.

The Project Coordinator will also assist in the implementation of a study of HIV and TB infection among high risk populations in Tijuana, Mexico. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, design and formatting questionnaires, managing data collection and analysis, creating methods for maintaining study-related documents, preparing and maintaining human subjects protocols, and preparing and submitting progress reports to the funding agency. It is preferred that the Project Coordinator be bilingual in English and Spanish so that s/he can communicate with project staff and collaborators in Mexico. Ability to translate back and forth between the two languages verbally and in writing is also preferred.

In addition, the Project Coordinator will assist in designing, and submitting future research grants in these and other areas of research to support ongoing activities in the Division. The Project Coordinator will supervise and perform a variety of field recruitment and networking tasks that require ingenuity, resourcefulness, and flexibility. S/he will also conduct data analyses and participate in the preparation of grant proposals and scientific manuscripts for publications on research findings. Must have access to reliable transportation for off site visits and willing to travel to Mexico as necessary. Must be available to work flexible hours, including infrequently evenings and weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Must have at least intermediate ability to read, write, speak, and translate English/Spanish, and willing to work toward proficiency.

* Advanced theoretical knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research analysis as typically acquired by a Masters degree in Health Sciences. Theoretical knowledge in Psychology, Epidemiology, Public Health, or related field. Strong knowledge of research design and methodology.

* Graduate level knowledge of statistical methods (theory and procedures learned in graduate level statistics courses); including experience using standard statistical programs (e.g. SPSS, SAS). Advance level skill Microsoft word and excel. Experience using database systems for study participant tracking and coordinating data collection activities.

* Experience organizing and managing research data bases including merging files, labeling variables and values, creating code books, and computing and transforming variables.

* Ability to independently assess the needs of the recruitment and intervention areas to develop appropriate strategies to meet them. Ability to oversee implementation of strategies, evaluate their effectiveness, and revise as needed. Demonstrated experience with quality control procedures in a human subjects research environment to maintain participant confidentiality. Experience conducting interviews of a sensitive nature with specific attention to confidentiality.

* Proven project management skills with the ability to develop, analyze and carry out program and project objectives. Demonstrated problem solving skills. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to identify problems and develop innovative solutions.

The Florida Department of Health is seeking a full time Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Coordinator in the Bureau of Epidemiology. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the PRAMS survey and data dissemination at the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section.

Major responsibilities:

Coordinates the PRAMS survey, including designing the survey questionnaire, training PRAMS staff, managing data collection activities, monitoring the quality of survey process and data, and disseminating the data obtained from CDC.

The newly formed intramural Laboratory of Translational Genomics (LTG) in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting two tenure-track/tenured investigators. The mission of the LTG is to investigate the genetic basis of strong association signals identified in candidate gene association studies, loci identified by linkage analyses in high-risk families, or genome-wide association studies (GWAS), particularly the loci identified by the ongoing Cancer Genetic Markers of Susceptibility (CGEMS) program involving GWAS of several major cancers. Investigators in the LTG are expected to develop an independent research portfolio focused on (1) fine mapping and re-sequencing of loci relevant to cancer susceptibility and/or outcomes, (2) investigation into the causal gene variants that provide biological plausibility for each locus, and (3) bioinformatic analyses of publicly available datasets derived from germline annotation of genetic variation and somatic alterations in cancers. Each investigator is expected to develop an innovative research program in cancer genomics that leverages the NCI resources in molecular epidemiology, high-throughput genotyping and whole genome scans, biostatistics and bioinformatics, as well as in basic and clinical sciences. The Department of Community Health Sciences, working with the Tulane Cancer Center and the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium, is seeking one tenured or tenure-track faculty member with a productive research program in cancer prevention, health disparities, and health promotion.

The Department has sections in Maternal & Child Health, Health Education & Communication, and Nutrition, but more broadly sees its mission as developing community-based solutions to national public health problems. We are the academic home for the federally-funded Tulane Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women`s Health and a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center. In addition, Tulane Cancer Center has NIH- and DOD-funded cancer research programs focusing on disparity in cancer outcomes in partnership with Xavier University. We have very strong ties with nearby city and state public health agencies as well as community-based organizations, which provide many opportunities for community studies on cancer screening and cancer-prevention behavior. The primary responsibility for this position is conducting research on the behavioral and social aspects of cancer prevention, particularly in low-income and minority populations. This includes research on health-related behaviors such as nutrition and smoking. Both urban and rural populations are of interest to the Tulane Cancer Center. Other responsibilities include mentoring junior faculty, teaching graduate students and performing community service. You should have a PhD/MSc in Statistics/Statistical genetics/Genetic epidemiology or equivalent with 2+ years relevant experience in the analysis of genetic data. You will have demonstrated competency in at least one statistical package such as SAS, S-plus or R and working knowledge of UNIX.
