Omaha, NE: Health Services Researcher, Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center And College of Public Health, University of Nebraska Medical Center

Health Services Researcher POSTED: Oct 24

Salary: Open
Location: Omaha, NE
Employer: University of Nebraska Medical Center
Type: Full Time - Experienced
Category: health services administration
Required Education: Doctorate

Description
Joint Position, Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center And College of Public Health, University of Nebraska Medical Center

Health Services Researcher

The Position: The Omaha VA Medical Center (OVAMC) and the UNMC College of Public Health (CoPH) Department of Health Services Research and Administration (HSRA) are seeking a physician health services researcher with a particular focus in clinical effectiveness and/or patient safety. This is a joint position appointment in HSRA with primary responsibility (5/8) to the VA, a courtesy appointment will be sought in the relevant clinical department at UNMC. The UNMC appointment is tenure-leading.

The Opportunities: Both the OVAMC and the UNMC partner hospital, the Nebraska Medical Center, have strategic priorities to improve patient safety and clinical effectiveness through evidence-based practices. As a consequence both institutions have rich data bases for health services research that contributes to improvement in clinical care. UNMC will establish a fully functional Center for Clinical and Translational Research during the next 12 months, generating more demand for relevant health services research and opportunities for studies that attract extramural funding and result in top tier publications. The OVAMC has recently increased capacity for data programming and statistical analysis, but seeks scholarly leadership in this position to take full advantage of the opportunity. Similarly, the CoPH is supporting an initiative in patient safety and clinical effectiveness with faculty expertise in health economics, biostatistics, health policy, and health services research. The Department of HRSA will launch a PhD program in health services research, administration and policy in September, 2008.

The Environment: The CoPH includes two research centers with established, active records in funded research and publication/dissemination of results to diverse audiences: the RUPRI Center for Rural Health Policy Analysis (www.rupri.org/healthpolicy) and the Nebraska Center for Rural Health Research (www.unmc.edu/rural). The two research centers, along with innovative programs in medical education and clinical care, have established UNMC as a premier institution for addressing the health care needs of rural communities. Given its presence in the Midwest, the OVAMC also presents unique opportunities for studies related to care of rural residents (veterans). The Department of HSRA includes faculty with expertise in health economics, medical geography, health policy and health services research, along with 6 data analysts and 6 graduate assistants. The CoPH has increased capacity in biostatistics, epidemiology and health services research in 2007 and will be doing so again in 2008. UNMC fosters a culture of collaboration across departments and colleges, as evident in current health services research projects that include faculty in Nursing, Pharmacy, Neurology, Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine and Geriatric Medicine. UNMC is a growing institution that is achieving aggressive goals in increasing extramural and internal support for research activity; the level of research awards has risen from $41 million in 2000-01 to over $72 million in the current year.

Requirements
The Qualifications: We seek an individual with a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and a proven ability to secure extramural funding for clinical research, including VA merit awards. The candidate must be a physician with training in health services research.
Applicants should send a letter of interest with curriculum vitae and references to: Keith Mueller, Ph.D. 984350 Nebraska Medical Center Omaha, NE 68198-4350 Email: kmueller@unmc.edu

During the APHA Annual Meeting (Nov 3 through Nov 5, 3:00 pm) you may contact Dr. Mueller directly at 402-319-3930.
