Cambridge, UK: Research Associate (genetic epi of prostate cancer), Department of Oncology, University of Cambridge

Research Associate
Department of Oncology
University of Cambridge
£25,888-£33,780

Limit of tenure applies*

We would like to recruit a Research Associate to start in October 2008 to work on the EU FP7 ProMark Consortium project 'Genetic prostate cancer variants as biomarkers of disease progression'.

There have been a number of recent publications identifying polymorphisms with a high statistical significance in predicting prostate cancer risk1-4. The vast majority of these polymorphisms lie in non-coding regions although in certain cases in the promoters (TCF2 gene) and introns (LMTK2 gene) of genes. There are therefore challenges to directly linking this data to protein function or expression. A hypothesis is that polymorphisms in non-coding regions will affect transcription or splicing of these genes. The successful candidate will seek to test this focussing initially on TCF2 but with the freedom to explore other candidates. Owing to the challenges of the project the successful postholder will preferably have both a PhD and prior postdoctoral experience. The skills required to address this project will include bioinformatics (array and ChIP data analysis), familiarity with biostatistics and SNP studies and practical experience of genomics approaches and the generation of stable cell-lines. In addition experience of immunohistochemistry and bioassay development would be beneficial but not essential. The project is to be undertaken as part of an EU FP7 Programme which is coordinated by DeCode Genetics and Professor John Masters (UCL) is the principal scientific collaborator for the development of appropriate prostate cancer cell-lines and functional studies.

quality of public health and the environment. EPA seeks to recruit
exceptional men and women who will work in new creative ways that
are cleaner for the environment, cheaper for business and taxpayers,
and smarter for America's future.

This position is located in the Office of Research and Development
(ORD), National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA)-
RTP, Environmental Media and Assessment Group (EMAG) in Research
Triangle Park, NC.

NCEA/RTP and other NCEA units have the main responsibility for
scientific assessment activities within ORD and the Agency in
general. Such assessments are very broad and typically have
significant implications for national and international
environmental policy development and implementation. Assessment
activities of NCEA/RTP include preparation of Integrated Science
Assessments (ISAs) (previously known as Air Quality Criteria
Documents) and other types of assessments.

Please visit NCEA for more
information on the office in which this position is located.

NOTE: This position is also being announced under Delegated
Examining procedures under announcement number RTP-DE-2008-0103.
To be considered under multiple announcements, applicants must apply
separately under each announcement.
Key Requirements:

Must meet time-in-grade requirements
College transcripts are required from ALL applicants regardless of status.

Major Duties:

NCEA plays a vital role in EPA's work to protect against air
pollution effects on public health and the environment by assessing
and evaluating the scientific information about air pollutants. The
Clean Air Act mandates the development of criteria that "shall
accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge useful in
indicating the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on public
health or welfare which may be expected from the presence of such
pollutant in the ambient air, in varying quantities" (Section 108).
A major product of this work is the Integrated Science Assessments
that are prepared for the six common "criteria" pollutants: ozone,
particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon
monoxide and lead. These evaluations provide the scientific
foundation for EPA decisions on whether to retain or revise the
national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS). The NAAQS have
exceedingly high impact in protecting public health and the
environment, thus, the scientific soundness of the health and
welfare assessment is of crucial importance. NCEA/RTP assessments
have very broad implications, not only nationally for the U.S., but
also internationally.

The incumbent contributes major input to development of chapters on
health effects assessment in Integrated Science Assessments which
includes planning, providing guidance/oversight to others,
performing portions of the work, reviewing the product, serving as
contracting officer's technical representative for monitoring work
under contracts.

Provides health science inputs to NCEA/RTP research program
elements. Assists senior management with the creation of long-range
goals for developing and enhancing NCEA risk assessment
capabilities, research strategies and options, and research
initiatives.

Provides health evidence evaluation support for NCEA/RTP technical
assistance to other U. S. Federal, State, local agencies and
internationally.

Serves as a key consultant on health effects evaluation to the
Director of NCEA/RTP providing scientific inputs to and/or review of
air pollutant-related risk or exposure analyses.

Extramural resources management duties comprise less than 25% of the
duties of the position and consist of contracts management,
grants/cooperative agreements, and/or Interagency agreements.

analysis for epidemiological studies and evaluation of data from
such studies to enable the incumbent to serve as a technical
authority in extending and adapting existing approaches and applying
new developments that investigate critical or obscure problems in
the specialty area. Skills relevant to assessment of health effects
from air pollutants are particularly desirable.

Professional knowledge of a scientific field as evidenced by a
degree in epidemiology, statistics, health sciences or a closely
related quantitative field.

Knowledge in the study of health effects from exposure to air
