Rockville, Maryland: Branch Chief positions (epidemiologists), Division of Epidemiology / Vaccine Safety Branch, Food and Drug Administration

Branch Chief Openings
Job Code: 0 POSTED: Sep 03

Salary: 115,317.00 - 149,000.00
Location: Rockville, Maryland
Employer: FDA/CBER/OBE/DE
Type: Full Time - Experienced
Categories: Academic / Research, Epidemiologist
Required Education: Doctorate

Description
The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) Division of Epidemiology (DE) is soliciting applications from well-trained epidemiologists with knowledge of biological applications. Two branch chief positions (Supervisory Medical Officers, GS-602-15) offer leadership opportunities in biologic product safety surveillance and research.
The new Analytic Epidemiology Branch will provide comprehensive data analyses and related collaborations for vaccines and other products regulated by CBER, which include blood, blood components, blood derivatives, tissue for transplantation, and cell and gene therapies. Using federal medical claims data, medical care information systems of health maintenance organizations, and patient registries, the Branch will plan and conduct analytic and research activities to test safety hypotheses, refine signals, and improve methodologies. Studies may assess utilization of products, rates of disease, product-adverse event associations, adjustment for confounding, and avoidance of bias.

The Vaccine Safety Branch works closely with CBER’s Office of Vaccines Research and Review (OVRR) to monitor the safety of preventive vaccines after licensure through surveillance of case reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System and other data sources. The branch publishes extensively in the medical literature, illustrating diverse ways for safety surveillance to contribute to the essential information about vaccine risks and benefits needed by patients and physicians.

Both branches participate in safety evaluations throughout the product lifecycle, starting well before licensure. They assess Pharmacovigilance Plans and assist in designs for appropriate Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) or Phase 4 studies. Vaccine and other safety surveillance and analytic work frequently includes sister HHS agencies, including collaborations with CDC colleagues in Atlanta and the CDC Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD).

NOTES: 2 openings. International Candidates Will Be Considered

Requirements
Candidates with interest or experience in current high-profile areas, such as knowledge discovery through data mining, will be especially attractive. CBER medical epidemiologists work in an environment dedicated to the public health and the highest scientific standards in safety surveillance and research for biological therapies and vaccines. Good written and oral communication skills are essential. The successful candidates will interact extensively with other FDA reviewers, industry scientists, and scientists in other government agencies and in academia. They will represent CBER at meetings and workshops focusing on methods and policies for design and evaluation of safety surveillance and safety hypothesis testing studies. They collaborate with medical colleagues and expert laboratory scientists on the development of scientific and regulatory policy and frequently have the opportunity to represent CBER with outside groups.
