The Research Participation Program for the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM) provides opportunities to participate in USACHPPM on- going applied research projects in the areas of epidemiology, environmental health engineering, entomological sciences, ionizing and nonionizing radiation, occupational and environmental health, industrial hygiene and worksite hazards, environmental sanitation and hygiene, and laboratory services worldwide.
PROJECT DETAILS
An appointment is available at the USACHPPM, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD in the Directorate of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance (DEDS), Behavioral and Social Health Outcomes Program. The incumbent will work as part of a team of epidemiologists, social workers, health educators, and statisticians to analyze Army data on behavioral and social health issues and develop evidence-based policies and programs to promote and maximize the psychological health of Army Soldiers, Families, communities, and units.
Background: No comprehensive behavioral health epidemiology and surveillance program exists to evaluate the full spectrum of psychological health and social wellness in Army communities. Great demand exists for such capacity, as evidenced by increasing requests from Army leadership (OTSG, Army G-1, the Proponency for Rehabilitation and Reintegration, etc.) for actionable data on population health indicators in this area. USACHPPM recently received funding from MEDCOM to build a Behavioral and Social Health Outcomes program.
This appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
• Provide expert statistical advice to epidemiologists constructing a behavioral health data base and surveillance system. Scope of duties includes recommending strategies to optimize linking and analysis of multiple complex data sets. • Analyze, interpret and disseminate information regarding the status, trends, and determinants of the behavioral health and fitness of America’s Army • Assist in the coordination, planning, and execution of behavioral health research investigations, field studies, field surveys, and program evaluations relating to behavioral health epidemiology. • Conduct surveillance of outcomes and variables which stand as indicators of the behavioral and social health of communities and organizations across the Army. • Provide expert consultation to the Army in the development, implementation and assessment of evidence-based policies and programs that promote and maximize the psychological and social health of our soldiers, families, organizations, and communities in the Army. • Present research at least once a year. • Travel within the U.S. and possibly outside the U.S. if required.
Qualifications: Applicants should have received a master's or doctoral degree in Biostatistics or related discipline within three years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Applicants with experience in analysis of complex data sets with SAS, SUDAAN, and SPSS would be advantageous. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by- case basis. Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and is operated by Oak Ridge Associated Universities. (ORAU) for DOE under a “Management and Operating” contract between ORAU and DOE.
