The University of Texas at El Paso, College of Health Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of the Chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Director, Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at the associate professor or professor level from talented and experienced national leaders who will cultivate excellence in research, teaching, and service.
Responsibilities: The Chair will have the opportunity to provide leadership for an established and growing department by shaping the future for the new MPH degree program and participating in new program development in the department and College. The Chair will establish an independent, externally-funded research program in his/her specialty area, mentor graduate students, carry a limited teaching load and perform university service and community outreach.
Qualifications: Required qualifications include (1) an earned doctoral degree in public health, nutrition, or a closely related field from an accredited university, (2) a strong record of teaching excellence and academic scholarship as demonstrated by research publications and the ability to secure extramural research funding consistent with appointment to associate professor or professor with tenure, (3) evidence of successful leadership and resource management experience in a U.S. higher education setting, (4) record of active participation or leadership roles in professional organizations, (5) experience with CEPH program accreditation, and (6) demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health or nutritional sciences, a strong collaborative research record, prior work experience in a multi-cultural setting, and a Hispanic and/or border health research focus.
The Department: The department offers an MPH degree with a concentration in Hispanic and Border Health and is currently developing a new Master of Science degree in nutrition. It also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion. Departmental faculty actively participate in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences PhD Program that is jointly administered by the College of Health Sciences and School of Nursing. The department has approximately 175 undergraduate majors and 30 graduate students. Its eight full-time faculty are widely recognized for their Hispanic, border and global health research.
The College: The College of Health Sciences provides teaching, research and services related to the applied health sciences (www.utep.edu/chs). It has five departments (Health Promotion, Clinical Laboratory Science, Kinesiology, Social Work, Rehabilitation Sciences), a cooperative Pharmacy program with the University of Texas at Austin, and a collaborative relationship with the University of Texas at Houston School of Public Health-El Paso regional campus. Strong collaborative ties also exist with the UTEP School of Nursing and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. The College is staffed by over 50 full-time faculty and serves more than 1,400 students. It is nationally recognized for its innovative research in Hispanic and border health and health disparities. The College is nationally recognized for its innovative research in border health, Hispanic health and health disparities and has a record of success with NIH and external health research funding. The College is scheduled to move to its new $60 million building on the main campus in Fall 2011. This 132,000 ft2 facility will house state-of-the art clinical and laboratory research laboratories, innovative teaching spaces, and faculty and administration offices.
The University: The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a Doctoral/Research-Intensive urban university offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs to 20,000+ students.
